John Alele examines recent threats in the modern day Security Environment.

The number of crimes involving knives, firearms and imitation firearms is reportedly in the increase in the UK.

Join me in the months to come as I take a closer look at the so-called ‘UK Weapons Culture’ and Government-backed initiatives designed to combat it – before detailing a current project that examines recent threats to Door Supervisors and Retail Security Officers in the modern day Security Environment.

In the course of my research, I will be communicating with Assessor and Consultant Geoff Woodcock and Andy Perkins and Claire Vanneck from Leicester University, who have researched violent assaults on door staff. Mark Toner, author of Stop it on the Door - Professional Doorman’ DVD and Jacqui Kennedy, director of regulatory services at Birmingham City Council

“Of the 839 murders in England and Wales in the 12 months ending on 28 November 2005 – the most recent period for which Home Office figures are available – 29% involved sharp instruments including knives, blades or swords”

Now, to mention but a few, On Sunday, 10 February 2008, a doorman was shot at a nightclub in west Dublin in the early hours of the morning. The 38-year-old was shot in the neck while working at the Red Cow in Clondalkin.”

“On a chill Wednesday afternoon in January, an argument broke out between a group of men who were dining in Nando's chicken restaurant in Shepherd's Bush, London. A gun was produced and four shots fired. One man was killed and a waitress injured. According to Nando's official statement, the restaurant "was in the wrong place at the wrong time".

“In the Event Security sub-sector, meanwhile, the number of weapons found during crowd searches is also on the increase. One of the most extreme incidents occurred last January, resulting in the shooting of two stewards by an armed gang during a concert by award-winning rap star Kanye West at the NEC in Birmingham. One of the stewards was shot three times.”
