Armed bank robbers attack security guard.

The masked robbers struck at Lloyds TSB in Walsgrave Road, Stoke, at about 10.45am on a Tuesday morning. The second bank raid in the city in just a few days.

Police said they attacked a security delivery guard before escaping in a getaway car with an undisclosed amount of cash.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said four raiders, all thought to be men, were involved. One waited in a grey Ford Focus while the other three stole the money after threatening the Security Officer outside the bank with a handgun. No shots were fired and the guard was not injured

The car made off up Shakespeare Street and turned right into Dane Road.

Brian Ellis, aged 33, who was at work with his 59-year-old father, Ken, in the family butchers F.E Ellis, in Walsgrave Road, told how he was on the phone to police as the dramatic incident unfolded.

He said: "The first we knew was there was a bit of a scuffle outside. Three men, all wearing balaclavas, were pulling a security guard out of the bank.

"They pushed him around the back of his van. One of them had a small handgun. I got straight on to the police and was describing what was happening as it happened.

"There was only my dad and I here in the shop at the time. There were no customers.
"They ran off to a car, a grey Ford Focus, and sped off up Shakespeare Street.

"The guard wasn't knocked to the ground or hurt at all. The police arrived within a few minutes, but the men were well away by then."

Halifax bank security guard fights off sledgehammer-wielding raiders

A SECURITY guard fought off raiders who came at him with a sledgehammer.

The wannabe robbers fled empty-handed from the Halifax bank, in Wharf Street, Sowerby Bridge, after demanding the cash boxes from security guards.

Two men, one wearing a balaclava and carrying a sledgehammer, burst into the bank at 9.30pm on a Thursday night as cash was being delivered.

A police spokesman said: "After a brief scuffle with the Security Officer they made off empty handed in a green BMW car.

"The Security Personnel was not seriously injured." Police have described the first intruder as white, wearing all black clothes and a balaclava. The second man is also white and was wearing a green parka-style jacket.

One Sowerby Bridge resident said:"The whole town was blocked off by police.

I had to go all the way round the back of the train station. "The roads were still cordoned off at 10.30pm when I was trying to come through."

Store guard 'killed in Psycho knife attack'

Shoppers horrified as security guard killed at HMV.

A security guard, Paul Cavanagh, 30, was killed with a carving knife as he tackled a suspected shoplifter in Norwich.

Another Security Officer, a 34-year-old colleague was knifed in the shoulderblade, after rushing to try to intercept the culprit.

The HMV store in Norwich's new Chapefield Shopping Centre was thronged with shoppers when the attack happened.

Paramedics treated Mr Cavanagh at the scene, but were unable to save him as the knife had severed a major neck artery.

He was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, but died a few hours later.

Police searched the city centre with a helicopter and dogs, and later arrested two men - one 19, and one 18.

Chief Inspector Roger Wiltshire said: 'What has happened is a complete tragedy. Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim's family and friends at this time.

'Thankfully, incidents like this are extremely unusual in Norwich. We have launched a full investigation into what happened and currently have two individuals under arrest.'
