Security guard threatened in Benton Asda van robbery

A security guard was threatened with a hammer during a raid on a cash van at a North Tyneside supermarket.

Police said the masked robber targeted the van outside Asda in Benton just before 14:30 GMT when the store was full of shoppers.

A quantity of cash was stolen from the van, but it is not believed the guard was injured during the raid.

Northumbria Police said the robber was stocky, about 5ft 11in and may have had an accomplice.

Man's jaw broken in Edinburgh store attack

A man suffered a broken jaw after being attacked while trying to help a security guard who was arguing with two men outside a store in Edinburgh.

Police said the men turned on the 25-year-old victim when he intervened during the argument.

The victim needed surgery after he was punched, knocked to the ground and kicked around the head.

The incident happened at about 03:45 outside the Scotmid store in Nicolson Street.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "The victim was attacked after he went to the assistance of the shop's security guard who was trying to deal with two members of the public who were remonstrating with him and, on doing so, they turned their attention to the young man when he intervened.

"In a totally unprovoked attack, this man received a serious facial injury. We are appealing for anyone who witnessed this vicious assault or has any information to contact us."

The two suspects, who are both white and believed to be in their early 20s, made off south along Nicolson Street.

The first is described as being of stocky build, about 5ft 8in tall and wearing a dark top and jeans, Timberland-style boots and a woolly hat.

The second is of slim build, with short dark hair, about 5ft 10in tall, wearing a grey top and jeans.

Third guilty of robbing security guard in Machynlleth

A third man has admitted robbing a security guard carrying £13,000 in cash from a bank in Machynlleth, Powys.

Robert Court, 23, from Solihull, west Midlands, was remanded in custody after his plea last Friday.

Mark Ricardo Lawlor, 26, from Solihull, and Micquel Daniel France, 24, from the Birmingham area, had previously pleaded guilty. They will be sentenced later.

All three took part in the robbery outside Barclays on 19 May, Mold Crown Court heard.

Judge Rhys Rowlands was told Court had also pleaded guilty to a separate robbery and was awaiting sentence at Stoke Crown Court.

Lawlor and France's sentencing had been delayed in order for the case of Court to be dealt with simultaneously.

Getaway driver

The court heard that France was a serving prisoner on day release from Sudbury prison when the robbery took place.

He was collected from the prison, and he and Lawlor robbed the guard after pushing him to the floor, while Court was said to have been the getaway driver.

France and Lawlor were arrested a short time later, and the money was recovered.

The court was told France had received a 12-year sentence for attempted murder in 2006, and Lawlor had received a 12-year sentence in 2004 for robbery and possession of a firearm when a security officer was attacked outside a west Midlands supermarket.

Judge Rowlands said the issue of dangerousness would have to be considered when they came to be sentenced.

College course in Fleetwood to thwart pirates

No ship with armed guards has ever been captured”
John Matthews, Head of Fleetwod Nautical Campus

"When some skippers see pirates are coming they stop the engine - that is just about the worst thing you can do."

For Tony Dumbell, head of Maritime Operations at Fleetwood Nautical Campus, dealing with pirates is a matter of common sense, as he speaks from a virtual ship's bridge in a classroom off the Lancashire coast.

The Gulf of Aden may be a world away from the Irish Sea but this college is leading the way in preparing mariners on how to deal with pirates.

It also helps sea marshals - armed security guards based on ships - tackle the basics of managing the potentially-lethal situation.

The college, where Prince William learned how to escape from a submerged helicopter, is offering modules on dealing with piracy as part of its courses for merchant navy officer cadets.

Campus head John Matthews said the college decided to offer the courses after a former student told them about an attempted piracy attack 18 months ago.

The ship eventually repelled the attempted boarders by hurling large chunks of wood at the approaching launch.

Although students don body armour and are taught how to avoid rocket propelled grenades, much of the training offered is based on the less heroic world of protocols, procedure and risk management.

"We're not looking for Rambos," said Mr Matthews.

Sea marshals on the course are ex-servicemen drawn from security firms who have weeded out any unsuitable applicants.

It is already taken for granted they know how to handle weapons and operate in combat situations.

Students learn how to deal with emergencies using a simulated ship's bridge which can replicate any conditions at sea from storms to gunmen landing on deck. The computer generated images which can be seen on the screen are so realistic that some people even report feeling slightly seasick as they view the swell of the waves.

Ships' officers learn how to carry out risk assessments for each voyage - this will usually determine the number of marshals to keep aboard.

Once at sea, ships operate a six-mile exclusion zone - any craft encroaching into this area will force the marshal to decide whether to fire warning flares.

His next step might be to issue the crew with body armour and his last move might be to collect live ammunition from a locked cupboard.

Panic room
By this time the naval coalition patrolling the gulf will have been contacted and non-essential crew moved to the ship's citadel - a maritime panic room in the bowels of the vessel.

Normally warning shots are enough to deter pirates but if a pirate craft keeps heading to the vessel, eventually the crew will be ordered into the citadel. This is the time to cut the engines and sit tight until helicopters or ships from the naval coalition arrive.

Eleven vessels with 149 hostages are currently being held by pirates, who are mostly Somalis.

The UK Chamber of Shipping recently said the longer term solution lies with action by the international community but in the short term, measures such as sea marshals will certainly help, or as Mr Matthews put it: "No ship with armed guards has ever been captured."

And there is one basic message for all mariners, "We always tell them to look behind you - that's where the pirates are coming from," he said.

Does anybody regulate private investigators?

A lawyer who represents phone-hacking victims is to sue News International for damages after it was revealed the News of the World hired private investigators to spy on him and another lawyer. But who regulates private investigators?

Under the Private Security Industry Act 2001, provision was made for private investigators to be licensed.

The Act set up the Security Industry Authority which prioritised the licensing of bouncers and wheel clampers.

There are now 367,000 people in the UK with valid SIA licences to work in the security industry.

But the SIA did not get round to private detectives and last year the government announced it was scrapping the organisation and replacing it with a "phased transition to a new regulatory regime".

Legislation is expected late next year and the new body, which will probably retain the SIA name, will be independent of state control.

It will be up to the new body, which may not come into force until 2013 or 2014, to decide on its priorities and whether it has the manpower to embark on licensing private investigators.

There are a number of professional organisations which represent the industry.

One of them is the Institute of Professional Investigators (IPI) and its secretary general, Dave Pryke, said they would like a licensing scheme to be introduced immediately.

'Professionalism'

He said of the News of the World revelations: "Certain journalists have been invading people's privacy to an outlandish extent. Licensing would make it clearer for the investigator what he can and cannot do.

"A licensing structure would help the professionalism of the industry because without licensing anybody can do anything."

Mr Pryke said there were between 20,000 and 50,000 people working as private investigators in the UK.

But he said many of them were "cowboys" and estimated that if regulation was introduced only around 2,000 people would be cleared to get a licence.

Mr Pryke said private detectives' work varies but includes divorce and personal work, as well as insurance fraud, tax investigation and corporate investigations.

The IPI offers training courses which warn investigators of the legal pitfalls.

Suspension risk

One of the biggest obstacles is the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 which made it illegal to tap phones, intercept e-mails or otherwise invade someone's privacy.

Mr Pryke said: "We would like to believe that our members are whiter than white and if any of them sail too close to the wind we'd learn about it, and if they went too far we would suspend them."

Other trade associations include the Association of British Investigators, the World Association of Professional Investigators and the World Association of Detectives.

A Home Office spokesman said: "We are currently considering whether to regulate private investigators.

"A new independent regulatory scheme will replace the Security Industry Authority, and that would cover any such regulation. In the meantime private investigators are subject to the law on intercepting communications like everyone else."

Police marksman describes Hampshire bank robbery shooting

A firearms officer who shot and killed an armed suspect during a bank robbery in Hampshire has described the moment he pulled the trigger.

Mark Nunes and Andrew Markland were shot by police during a security van raid in Chandlers Ford in 2007.

The Metropolitan Police rifleman told an inquest in Winchester he shot Nunes when he saw him aim a pistol at a security guard's head.

A second rifleman shot Markland when he ran towards Nunes' body.

The first rifleman, whose name has not been disclosed, said he was watching from near the HSBC Bank where police had been expecting the raid.

'Squeezed the trigger'
Describing the moment the cash van pulled up, he said: "My heart was racing. I felt like I'd just run a hundred metres. My heart was pounding.

"There was one bank robber at the bus stop, there was one in the car. I was scared.

Nunes died after being shot in the chest, while Markland was shot twice in the chest
"Members of the public were walking past. I knew that when the cash van door opened there would be some overt aggressive act towards the guard.

"Mark Nunes moved quickly with his pistol raised and put the gun to the guard's head. I believed the guard was to be shot - that there was a threat to life.

"Mark Nunes was in front of the guard. I could not shoot because the round might have hit the guard.

"I waited a few moments. Mark Nunes moved to the left. He was still a threat. He still had the gun to the guard's head. So I squeezed the trigger and fired one shot."

He said Nunes fell down and he then saw Markland run over to Nunes and crouch down. He then heard a shot fired by a second rifleman and Markland fell.

Lack of evidence
He told the inquest he then heard one more round fire by the second rifleman.

The second rifleman is due to give evidence later today.

Previously the court heard that Nunes, 35, and Markland, 36, both from London, were shot as they held up a G4S van at a branch of HSBC in December 2007.

Officers were lying in wait for the pair but had not arrested them earlier because of a lack of evidence.

The jury was shown police footage of Nunes being shot as he pointed a gun at the head of a security guard.

Central Hampshire coroner Grahame Short told jurors Markland then appeared to pick up the gun before being shot by another marksman.

Post-mortem examinations found Nunes died from a high-velocity gunshot wound to the chest which exited through the neck and Markland died from two separate high-velocity gunshot wounds to the chest.

The inquest continues.

Armed robbers have stolen cash from two security guards in Newcastle.

The guards were filling a cash machine at the junction of Welbeck Road and St Anthony's Road when they were targeted.

Two men carrying a firearm and a hammer threatened the guards, before making off with an undisclosed amount of money in a stolen car.

The vehicle was found burned out a short time later in Byker Terrace. Police are appealing for witnesses to the robbery at about 10:04 BST.

Royal Blackburn Hospital security guard attacked

A hospital security guard has been stabbed in an unprovoked attack, Lancashire Police have said.

Police said the 29-year-old guard met a man at about 00:10 BST while he patrolled the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

The security guard was stabbed after he asked the man if he needed any help.

Det Insp Jill Johnston, of Blackburn CID, said the security guard's stab vest was the only thing that prevented him from being seriously hurt.

She added: "It is highly unusual for something like this in these circumstances to happen and I would reassure the public that we are treating this matter extremely seriously.

"The victim was not seriously hurt but he has been left shaken following his ordeal and he is being supported by officers."

Jury sees footage of Mark Nunes and Andrew Markland shootings

Footage of the moment two robbers were shot dead by police marksmen has been shown to an inquest jury.

Mark Nunes, 35, and Andrew Markland, 36, both from London, were shot as they held up a G4S van in Hampshire in 2007.

The inquest at Winchester Coroner's Court was shown police footage of Nunes being shot as he pointed a gun at the head of a security guard.

The coroner told jurors Markland then "appeared" to pick up the gun before being shot by another marksman.

Nunes and Markland were shot outside the HSBC bank in Chandler's Ford in September 2007.

Series of robberies

The families of the dead men wept as the police surveillance footage was shown at the hearing.

The Metropolitan Police had been at several locations in Hampshire after intelligence told them a gang would rob a van in the county.

Officers had been investigating a series of armed and unarmed robberies in London and the Home Counties.

An operation codenamed 'Hurlock' had identified Nunes as a suspect.

The covert surveillance footage shows Nunes get out of a Volvo estate car and walk towards the van as it made the delivery.

He was filmed pointing a handgun at the head of the guard before being shot dead by a police marksman, hidden at an observation post, opposite the bank.

Markland, who was waiting at a bus stop over the road, was seen to run over to the guard and Nunes.

Central Hampshire coroner Grahame Short told the jury that it would look at the "operational and tactical decisions that preceded those events" to consider how the men died.

Post-mortem examinations found Nunes died from a high-velocity gunshot wound to the chest which exited through the neck and Markland died from two separate high-velocity gunshot wounds to the chest.

The inquest is expected to take six weeks.

Blaenau Gwent council in private litter warden trial

A council is to use a private security firm to issue fines to people dropping litter or not cleaning up after pets.

Blaenau Gwent will use wardens employed by XFOR, which already works with four English local authorities, to issue £75 fines for a trial six-month period.

The wardens will wear body cameras to record encounters with people for health and safety and evidence reasons.

Both XFOR and the council will receive an income, with the council employing two dog mess wardens with its share.

The council said it received hundreds of complaints about street cleanliness.

XFOR currently works with local authorities in Enfield, Broxbourne, Hertfordshire and Maidstone and can issue up to 200 fixed penalty notices a month in the area it operates.

Under the Blaenau Gwent scheme its wardens, along with management and support staff, will be based in council premises at Abertillery, with workers recruited from the local area.

Households in Blaenau Gwent will receive a letter in the next few weeks.

The council said it had already taken steps to tackle the problem.

These include issuing fines via its own enforcement officers, increasing patrols and surveillance in highlighted areas, sending out letters and putting up more than 300 dog bins around the county borough.

There are also plans for a further 250 bins over the next five years.

But the council's John Hopkins said more needed to be done.

'Zero tolerance'

"Our enforcement officers are employed to carry out a number of different roles and so are unable to completely dedicate their time solely to fixed penalty notices," he explained.

"By working with XFOR we can adopt a cost neutral, high profile, zero tolerance approach to catching the people responsible for dropping litter and letting their dogs foul and sends out a strong message that this type of behaviour is just not acceptable."

XFOR's Michael Fisher said: "Littering is an expensive problem for local authorities. The money spent on street cleaning could be redirected to other schemes in the borough.

"We have developed a scheme - which is already in place with a number of local authorities - providing enforcement officers who patrol the streets issuing fixed penalty notices to offenders."

Security guard robbery in Bothwell

Police are checking CCTV images in a South Lanarkshire village after a security guard was robbed at gunpoint.

The guard was targeted as he came out of the Clydesdale Bank in Main Street, Bothwell, at about 11:00.

The robber got out of a charcoal-grey Ford Focus and threatened the guard with what appeared to be a firearm.

The guard was told to hand over the box he was carrying before the robber got back into the car, which sped off in the direction of Uddingston.

The guard was not injured but left badly shaken.

Local accent

Police said the description of the suspect was "limited" as he had his face covered up.

He is described as about 5ft 9in tall and spoke with a local accent.

Det Con Jim Conway, from Strathclyde Police, said: "I would appeal to anyone who may have been in Main Street around the time of the incident to get in touch.

"It's possible that someone may have noticed something a little out of the ordinary and their information could assist our inquiry.

T-shirt clue in Eastwood Tesco shooting inquiry

Police investigating the shooting of a security guard have released details of a T-shirt and sports bags which may have been used by the offenders.

The guard was shot in the leg during an armed robbery attempt outside the Tesco Express store in Nottingham Road, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, on 22 July.

The items were recovered from a stolen car believed to have been used by the offenders

The guard was filling a cash machine at the store when the attack happened.

The items include a black French Connection T-shirt with the slogan 'lucky fcuk' printed on the front, and two drawstring sports bags.

They were recovered from a stolen black Audi Quattro S3, which was found at Kingsway Gardens in Hucknall shortly after the incident.

Police said one of the sports bags is black and grey, and has the Nike name and logo printed on it in white. The other is black and has no logo, but has a 'B Magazine' label stitched along one side.

Security firm G4S and Tesco have offered a reward of up to £10,000 for the arrest and conviction of those involved.

Police are looking for three black men in connection with the incident.

Armed robbers target Cobham cash machine

Armed robbers wielding a baseball bat and a Samurai sword have attacked two security guards at a cash machine.

Kent Police said a substantial amount of cash was stolen in the robbery at a service station on the London-bound A2 at Cobham on Friday.

The robbers were thought to have used two vehicles which were later found abandoned in Gravesend and Hawley.

Officers said that one of the guards suffered bruising and the other was shocked but had no visible injury.

Det Insp Ian Dampier said the suspects initially drove a Mercedes van which they abandoned in Cobsdene, Gravesend.

The pair got into an Audi RS4 Quattro which was later found in Alfred Road, Hawley, near Dartford.

Both vehicles are being examined by forensic experts. Anyone with information is asked to contact the force.
