It was indeed a bright summer Friday evening, the time was 1645hrs.
At 1800hrs, I am scheduled to have dinner at The Savoy Hotel London with a business associate.

I gazed out of my office window to see the Friday evening crowd making their way to the various recreational locations the city offers.

At exactly 1655hrs, the phone on my desk rang.

John Alele, can I help? I answered.

Troy Webster, we have resolved that we require an additional ten Door Supervisors for tonight beginning from 1800hrs.
I took a quick look at the daily reserve list on my desk to realise we have a total of fifteen experienced Door Supervisors on standby for the evening.

3. Any security personnel reporting for duty will enter their full name, badge number and expiry date, next of kin details and time in / out on the company time sheet provided.


4. All relevant Health and Safety information is documented on appropriate paperwork as required.

As part of the roles and responsibilities of our Door Supervisors the following are included in their duties:

1. Facilitate the smooth running and operation of the venue.
2. Control ingress and egress of the venue and all exits.
3. To maintain the venues search policy, professionally and politely.
4. To ensure that patrons have a positive experience in a safe environment.
5. Assisting patrons and dealing with their concerns.
6. Observing the behaviour of patrons in the venue and maintaining the venues code of practice and conduct, by dealing appropriately and safely with those who are causing offence and potential danger or risk to themselves or others.
7. To ensure that licensing laws are upheld to prevent any criminal offences occurring in the venue.

Confronting your fears - Part 1

When the front door of my apartment was closed behind me and I stepped out into the dark cold winter morning in response to an urgent call, I knew I was in for a very long hectic day.

The time was 0234 hours.

Making my way to my car at the parking lot, it occurred to me that I had barely 15 hours to organise a package of 38 experienced Security Officers for a 12-hour assignment starting at 1730 hours.

Demand for our security officers has risen immensely having established a reputation for quality. We are indeed operating at almost full capacity.

I worked out a plan as I navigated my way to London via the motor way but first I have to deal with the issue at hand.

A mobile patrol officer has taken ill in the middle of his shift. Our 24-hour Control Centre has been unable to find a replacement and as such, I had to be drafted in.

Heading towards the town center an hour and half later, I deliberated on my plans for the day.

A bleep from my pager announced the arrival of a new message and was followed almost immediately by a loud voice on the radio.

Charlie One, Charlie One. Are you receiving please over?

Affirmative, I responded.

626’ Activation 626. Message follows please, over.

Roger that, Charlie One standing by. I responded.

Pulling over and swinging the patrol vehicle 180 degrees around, I headed for location 626.

Location 626 is a massive factory site located in the east part of town and surrounded by a huge perimeter fence; it has three entry points and six exit points.

One would be tempted to think that there could be an easier way of dealing with this. Simply drive down there, go into the premises and find out what is going on. WRONG! There are professional security procedures to follow when responding to alarm activation.

These procedures have been designed to minimise the risk of injury, loss of life and damage to property.

Caught in the act !

An eye for detail - John Alele writes on 'shoplifting'

Shoplifting, loss or “shrinkage” as it is often called in the retail world cost retailers millions of pounds every year.

Shop owners or retailers employ security personnel to act as a deterrent to shoplifters in an attempt to reduce loss but with a cloudburst of so many unskilled security personnel in the industry today, shop owners have realised that it is indeed a different ball game entirely to get their hands on the standard of service they anticipate.

In my endless effort to finding a permanent solution to tackling the quandary of shoplifting, I observed different security personnel at work at different retail outlets around the country.

On one occasion, I observed a shopper wearing a pair of blue denim trousers, a white shirt, and a black jacket and holding a few shop items in his hands, he walks into the changing room past the security guard standing at the entrance of the room and a few minutes later, emerges, walks past the same security guard and through the main manned exit doors of the shop into the streets wearing a pair of blue denim trousers, a white shirt and a dark navy blue jacket.

In the retail world, this kind of act of a shoplifter is referred to as ‘The Switch’.

This retailer would have well been saved the cost of a navy blue jacket if only his security personnel have an eye for detail.Yes, that’s right; good security personnel must have an eye for detail! A key skill requirement necessary to combat the ever rising problem of shoplifting in today’s retail industry.
