The Eiffel Tower in Paris has been evacuated after an anonymous phone-call threatening an attack.

 An estimated 1,400 people were visiting the site when France's anti-terrorism police made the decision to clear it.

 A security perimeter was set up around the world-famous monument and police said a search could take several hours, local media reported.

 The tower has been threatened several times in recent years. In 2011, 4,000 people were cleared from it.

 L'Express news website said that tourists and staff were told to come down from the tower at around 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT) on Saturday.

Security guards were also ordered to leave, a decision described as unusual.

Police then searched the area with sniffer dogs for possible explosives.

Security has recently been stepped up across the country amid concerns about threats to France over its military campaign in Mali.

Four men charged with 41 robberies, thefts and burglaries

Four men have been charged in connection with 41 robberies, thefts and burglaries across five counties.

The offences include armed robberies of banks and shops, house burglaries and car thefts in Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire.
Stewart Last, 28; Richard Loveridge, 27; Lee Fitzgerald, 37, from Berkshire, and Andrew Smith, 27, from Surrey, have been charged.
All four will appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on 25 March.

The charges relate to armed robberies of security guards and couriers delivering cash to banks and building societies between August 2011 and February 2012.
They are also charged with offences linked to stolen car number plates, burglaries at petrol stations, corner shops and supermarkets.

Crimewatch appeal over Lytham cash-in-transit robbery

A renewed appeal is being made over a cash-in-transit robbery which saw two men armed with a machete and a crowbar threaten security guards in Lancashire.

The robbery took place when two G4S guards were carrying a cashbox to the Santander Bank on Clifton Street, Lytham, at about 19:00 GMT on 6 March.

Police believe up to four men from the Manchester area were involved.

The appeal and a picture of the car used in the robbery will be shown on BBC Crimewatch later.

 The car, a silver Skoda Octavia which had been fitted with false number plates, was recovered near where the robbery happened.

 It had been stolen from the Chorlton-cum-Hardy area of Manchester.

 During the robbery, the two guards carrying the cashbox were approached by two men in dark clothing and balaclavas, wielding a 12" machete and a crowbar, who forced them to open it.

Sgt Nick Connaughton said he wanted any information about the men, who were believed to have arrived in the South Fylde area up to 24 hours before the robbery took place.

 "We're still keen to hear from anyone that was in Lytham town centre on the night of the robbery that saw anything suspicious to come forward," he said.

 "I'd also renew my appeal for hoteliers in the local area that recall having up to four men from the Manchester area staying overnight on Monday 4 March to contact us."

Anyone with information is urged to contact police or Crimestoppers anonymously.

Gucci store targeted in ram-raid in Sloane Street

About 50 designer bags - some said to be worth as much as £40,000 - have been stolen in a smash and grab raid on a flagship designer store in London.

The Met said a black Mercedes, which is thought to have been stolen, reversed into the Gucci store in Sloane Street at about 21:50 GMT on Wednesday.

The suspects, said to be three, then stole handbags before fleeing in a blue Audi A4. No arrests have yet been made.

Security guards were in the shop at the time but were said to be unhurt.

The exclusive store, which Gucci describe on their website as a "flagship boutique", is said to be reviewing its security and there are calls for greater protection from the Metropolitan Police.

BBC journalist Nick Beake, who is at the scene, said sources have told him that CCTV shows the men, who were wearing balaclavas, scoop the bags up and sling them across their shoulders.
