Sledgehammer used in Rugeley Nationwide armed raid

Two armed robbers used a sledgehammer and a crowbar to break into a building society in a Staffordshire town centre.

Police said the robbery happened at about 19:25 GMT on Monday at the Rugeley branch of the Nationwide as security guards were delivering cash.

The robbers smashed the front door and demanded cash from the guards, while a third stood outside.

Officers said the men escaped with a "quantity of cash". No-one was injured in the incident.

They said all three robbers wore black balaclavas, clothes and footwear. It is thought they escaped in a silver estate car.
Staffordshire Police urged anyone with information to contact them.

Dovercourt robbery: Plea for sightings of getaway car

Essex Police said they are looking for
sightings of a white Ford Focus like
the one pictured here
Two robbers escaping in a stolen Ford Focus could have been seen by a number of witnesses, Essex police believe.

Police are concentrating on their getaway route after the robbery at Barclays Bank in Dovercourt on Tuesday.

A 62-year-old security guard from the Ipswich area was punched in the face before a cashbox containing a five-figure sum of cash was stolen from him.

The white car was later found abandoned on Knights Close in Lawford about eight miles from the bank.

'Key witnesses'
Police said the car had been stolen during a burglary in Bramford in Suffolk on 6 November.

The empty cashbox was found on the B1352 close to Lunnish Hill, just outside Ramsey, on Wednesday morning.

Det Sgt Tim Coyles said: "Our main lines of inquiry relate to the getaway route that these two thieves took.

"We know it (the car) turned right at the top of Kingsway and then sped off towards Ramsey. Our initial appeal is for anyone who saw this car during this short journey.

"Our second appeal is for those motorists who saw the car travel from Ramsey, through Wrabness, into Bradfield, on to Mistley and then finally to the dump site in Lawford.

"These are all key witnesses," he said.

Tayside policeman to stand trial accused of assault

A Tayside Police officer is to stand trial accused of assaulting a nightclub bouncer with his baton while on duty, a court has heard.

PC Douglas Fisher is alleged to have assaulted Nawras Alwan during an incident at Fat Sam's nightclub in Dundee's South Ward Road on 23 October last year.

At Dundee Sheriff Court the 39-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Sheriff Tom Hughes continued the case to a trial starting on 13 December.

It is alleged that the officer, who was on duty, attacked Mr Alwan, a security guard at the nightclub, by repeatedly striking him on the body with his police baton to his injury.

PC Fisher's solicitor, George Donnelly, told the court that he was pleading not guilty to the charge.

Numerous witnesses

He said: "We have a report from an expert on the use of police batons. Senior counsel is instructed in this case and we require further consultation with them.

"This is anything but a simple charge of assault, just now there are 13 defence witnesses."

Fiscal depute Isma Mukhtar said: "The Crown are fully prepared. There are 18 Crown witnesses but it is hoped that some of the evidence can be agreed."

A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said: "An officer is the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal following an allegation of assault.

"The officer has not been suspended from operational duty. It would be wrong to comment further whilst the legal process is ongoing."

Security guard attacked in Gravesend Asda store raid

A security guard has been attacked by robbers outside a supermarket in Kent.

The two balaclava-clad men targeted the guard as he filled a cash machine at the Asda store on Thames Way, in Gravesend, just before 12:30 GMT.

They jumped out of a red Mini Cooper, assaulting the security guard and fleeing with a cashbox. The guard suffered a bruised wrist.

The vehicle was abandoned nearby while the cashbox was found in Swanley. It is not known how much money was taken.

Jail for Belfast man who tried to rob disguised policeman

A would-be armed robber who tried to rob a policeman posing as a security guard has been jailed for eight years.

Michael McCullagh, 56, from Donegall Street in Belfast, was part of a gang trying to rob a cash-in-transit van on Belfast's Springfield Road in 2009.

However, a police officer had taken on the role of the van guard.

When McCullagh threatened him with a small knife, other waiting officers arrested him. He admitted attempted robbery and possessing a weapon.

Belfast Crown Court heard the robbery happened less than two weeks after McCullagh had been released from jail, where he had been serving time for another robbery.

Judge Gordon Kerr told him although he was getting maximum credit for "facing up" at the earliest opportunity, his record, the offence itself and the fact that it came so soon after his release were "significant aggravating factors".

A defence lawyer said that while McCullagh did not make a defence of duress, he had been on a "five day drink and drug binge" which left him in debt to the people who had planned the robbery, adding that "he was more a soldier than an organiser".

Manchester Airport suspend worker for missing fake bomb

An airline security worker has been suspended after failing to spot a fake bomb as it passed through the X ray machine.
Manchester Airport said it had launched an investigation into the incident.

The Department for Transport carries out regular dummy runs at UK airports to ensure security is up to scratch.

A spokesman for the airport said: "We can confirm a security officer has been suspended but we cannot comment further as there is an ongoing investigation."

'Strict regime'

The Department for Transport spokesman said it conducted regular airport tests but could not comment further.

The spokesman said: "The safety of the travelling public is paramount, which is why the UK combines intelligence, technology and other measures to provide one of the strictest regimes for aviation security in the world.

"We have a regular programme of inspections to ensure compliance with this regime, but do not comment on the specifics or outcomes for obvious reasons."

In July, Manchester Airport suspended a number of airline staff after an 11-year-old boy boarded a plane from Manchester to Rome on his own without a passport, tickets or boarding pass.

The boy mingled with families to get through checks and was found mid-air on the Jet2 plane after passengers became suspicious.

Falkirk bonnet speeder sees sentence cut appeal fail

Suzanne Gilchrist sped through
Falkirk while Stuart Morris clung on to
the car's bonnet
A woman who was caught on camera driving at speed through Falkirk with a pedestrian clinging onto her car's bonnet has been refused a reduction in her jail sentence.

Suzanne Gilchrist, 38, was sentenced to four years and three months imprisonment for the incident.

Gilchrist challenged her sentence, claiming it was too harsh because she had admitted her guilt.

At the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh, her appeal was rejected.

The high speed chase happened after the 38-year-old was followed to her car by a security guard after she was suspected of shoplifting.

At Gilchrist's original trial, the court heard she shunted pedestrian Stuart Morris, who had been crossing the street, along the road, forcing him to jump onto the bonnet to avoid getting run over.'A gonner'

Mr Morris, 22, pleaded with her to stop but she accelerated along Manor Street in Falkirk with him hanging on top of the car as she swerved over the road trying to throw him off the bonnet.

When police arrived, Mr Morris told them he thought that he was "a gonner".

Sheriff Wyllie Robertson was shown CCTV footage of the incident at Stirling Sheriff Court, where Gilchrist pled guilty to assaulting Mr Morris to his injury and danger of his life on 2 June last year.

She admitted driving the car at him, hitting him, causing him to jump on the bonnet and driving at speed and from side to side through streets in Falkirk with him on the car.

The sheriff said it was a grave offence and decided to jail her earlier this year, telling her she would have received a four-and-a-half-year prison term, but for her guilty plea.

Harsh sentence

Gilchrist challenged her sentence following the sheriff's decision.

Her solicitor advocate Simon Collins argued at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh that the sentence should be quashed and a lesser term imposed following her guilty plea.

He said that in the circumstances of the case the amount of discount she received was "harsh and unfair" on her.

Lord Eassie, who heard the appeal with Lord Wheatley, said it might be thought that the percentage of reduction in Gilchrist's sentence was "somewhat niggardly" but it was within the sheriff's discretion and they would refuse the appeal.

Denbighshire hires Xfor over litter and dog mess

Denbighshire council said offenders
could be issued with a £75 fixed
penalty notice
A private security firm has been hired by a third Welsh council to enforce fines against dog owners who fail to pick up their pets and people who litter.

Denbighshire council said Xfor enforcement staff would be kitted out with video cameras, to patrol hotspot areas.

It said offenders could be issued with a £75 fixed penalty notice.

Blaenau Gwent and Vale of Glamorgan council already use Xfor.

Between October last year and July the firm handed out more than 1,000 fines in Blaenau Gwent.

It was the first authority in Wales to use a private contractor to back up its policy of fining people who drop litter, or dog walkers who fail to pick up their pet's mess.

Denbighshire council's cabinet member for environment, David Smith, said dog fouling and littering were two of the most common complaints in the county.

"It was highlighted in our latest residents survey as one of the most pressing issues in communities," he said.

"Not only is dog fouling a health hazard, it blights the environment in communities across the authority and now is the time to tackle the issue robustly.

"We will be looking to engage with communities, educate people on the need to clear up after their dogs and make it much easier for people to report through a free phone number and social media as well as the more traditional methods of making a complaint."

'Anti-social behaviour'
The council said using Xfor would cost the authority nothing, but the firm would take a percentage of what it received from issuing fixed penalty notices.

In the coming weeks, Denbighshire will be distributing flyers, guides, posters and postcards to inform people about the new scheme.

Councillor Smith added: "We hope residents will get fully behind this campaign and help reduce this anti-social behaviour once and for all, ensuring Denbighshire is one of the cleanest greenest counties in Wales."

Axe-wielding robbers target Black Country shops

Post office manager Sandra Suckling said staff were
"shocked" but not hurt in Thursday's robbery
Two shops in the Black Country have been targeted by axe-wielding robbers.

Staff and a delivery driver at the Spar store in Lawnswood Road, Wordsley, were tied up by two offenders who stole a "large amount of cash", police said.

The incident happened shortly before 06:50 BST and followed the theft of a cashbox on Thursday morning at a post office in Lake Street, Lower Gornal.

Two men threatened a security guard. On both occasions the assailants fled the scene on a motorbike.

The manager of the post office that was attacked at 09:00 BST, Sandra Suckling, said: "As the cash man went out of the shop a person came in with a crash helmet on... wielding what we later found out to be an axe.

'Faces covered'

"We couldn't tell at the time - it all happened that sudden.

"We're a bit resilient in this place. Nobody was hurt. It's just the shock of it."

Det Sgt Michael Greenland, from West Midlands Police, said: "During both offences the offenders had their faces covered.

"We are examining CCTV in the local area of each offence as well as carrying out local enquiries.

"We are aware of a current spate of robberies across the Black Country area.

"We are at an early stage of our investigations and trying to establish if there are any links between the offences."

Michaela McAreavey case: Security guard due in court

Dassen Naraynen is due in court
A former security guard at the Mauritian hotel where Michaela McAreavey was murdered is due in court charged in connection with the case.

Mrs McAreavey, 27, from County Tyrone, was killed in her honeymoon suite at the Legends hotel in Mauritius in January 2011.

Dassen Naraynen, also 27, is accused of conspiracy to commit larceny. He denies this.

He was originally charged with murder but this was later dropped.

He has denied any involvement in Mrs McAreavey's death.

Last month, two hotel workers were acquitted of her murder.

Detectives started a new investigation the day after the trial ended.
