Security guard stabbed to death by drug dealer in 'scene from Psycho'

A suspected shoplifter fatally stabbed a store detective in the neck and fled waving the knife above his head in a scene reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho', a court has heard.

David Watson, 20, had been taken to an office to be interviewed after he was stopped on suspicion of stealing a £15.99 CD in a shop.

He is said to have suddenly lost his temper and produced a kitchen knife which he plunged into father-to-be Paul Cavanagh, 30, before stabbing another security officer in the back.

Shoppers scattered as he fled the Chapelfield shopping centre in Norwich and ran through the city centre streets, covered in blood.

An off-duty special constable was allegedly slashed with the knife when he tried to give chase before Watson finally dropped the knife and gave himself up to police.

Another store detective, Gary Locke, later told officers: "It looked like something out of the film Psycho. I have never seen anything like it."

One of the most dramatic moments on the first day of the trial was when jurors were shown CCTV footage of Mr Cavanagh struggling to restrain Watson in the office.

Norwich Crown Court heard that Watson, of Hackney, north London, was a drug dealer who had travelled to Norwich because it was easier to sell there.

He had been wandering through an HMV store in the shopping centre when he was detained on suspicion of stealing a music CD.

When he was taken to a room to be questioned he allegedly took the knife from a bag, wielding it 'like a dagger', before stabbing Mr Cavanagh, of Rockland St Mary, near Norwich, whose fiancee was pregnant with their first child.

The six-inch deep wound sliced through the store detective's voice box and severed his right jugular vein. He died shortly afterwards.

Prosecutor Graham Parkins told the jury: "It was a vicious and brutal attack on an unarmed man who was merely doing his job."

Another security guard, Gavin Levett, 34, tried to escape back to the shop floor but was stabbed in the back, leaving a one-inch long wound.

Watson then fled onto the packed city centre streets.

Mr Parkins added: "The knife was in full view. He was holding it high over his head like a trophy, like he wanted to show people he had used it."

Off-duty special constable Ian Gardiner managed to corner Watson on a multi-storey car park staircase, the jury heard, but gave up the chase when he, too, was slashed with the knife.

Watson finally dropped the weapon in a supermarket car park and gave himself up to officers minutes later in a nearby street.

He is alleged to have later told a prison officer at Norwich jail, where he was on remand awaiting his trial, that he had been worried police would find £10,000 of crack cocaine in a carrier bag he had when they arrived.

He went on to tell the prison officer that he had taken out the knife to scare the security guards into letting him go.

Tests later revealed traces of cocaine and diamorphine in the bag.

Watson denies murdering Mr Cavanagh, wounding Mr Levett with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and attempting to wound Mr Gardiner with intent.

The case continues.

Gunman shoots security guard in legs

A supermarket Security Guard was shot in the legs as he approached a suspect van outside the store.

Officers confirmed that the Security Officer suffered serious injuries in the shooting in Bestwood Park Drive West, Nottingham.

The Licensed Security Guard, who was on duty at a Kwik Save store, spotted the white Ford van at a disused petrol station nearby and went to investigate.

"As he approached the Transit van, the rear door was opened from within and two shots were discharged at the guard," said a police spokeswoman.

"The guard suffered serious injuries to both legs.

"Police believe that the van then sped away, with the rear door still open, before the vehicle was abandoned nearby.

Officers later discovered that the gunman and any accomplices had attempted to set the van on fire, before fleeing the scene.

Security Guard fought off machete-wielding gang

A security guard bravely fends off masked robbers who surround him, hacking at his bare arms with a machete and two carving knives.

The 53-year-old may never regain the full use of one hand after suffering deep cuts in the attack as he was unloading cash boxes at a supermarket.

After his partner - who remained inside the armoured van - refused to let the three thugs inside, they fled empty-handed.

The attack happened just after the van arrived for an early-morning delivery at the Co-op in Middleton, near Oldham.

In scenes captured by cameras on the sides of the van, the security officer was ambushed when he went outside.

Despite having only his helmet and stab-proof vest for protection, he stood up to the robbers.

In the chase that followed, one slashed him across the forearm, causing a deep cut.

The gang then turned to his partner, who despite being threatened refused to open the van door.

Detective Constable Nigel Humphreys, of Rochdale CID, said: "The guard was very brave but he has suffered badly for it."

Recently, firearms officers from Greater Manchester Police have been escorting some security vans after an upsurge in "cash-in-transit" robberies.

A Home Office-supported crackdown cut such attacks from 617 in the first half of 2007 to 442 in the second, according to the British Security Industry Association.

Bulletproof vest saves Security Staff

A pub door supervisor was shot in the chest but survived unhurt because he was wearing an armoured vest.

He was hit when he and other Security Staff at the Rat and Parrot pub in Bexleyheath tried to break up a group of rowdy drinkers.

One of the drinkers produced a gun and fired two shots, hitting the Security Officer who survived uninjured but was badly shaken. No one else in the pub was hurt.

In a scuffle with other drinkers, two other male door Supervisors were hit with bottles and a third man suffered a broken arm.

All four door supervisors refused to be taken to hospital by ambulance workers who went to the pub shortly after.

The suspects, five men, who drove away from the pub in a BMW and a Mercedes after the shooting were in their twenties. Three were white, one was black and the other was of Asian appearance.

The entire bar staff were too scared of reprisals to talk about their ordeal.

A spokeswoman for Scottish and Newcastle breweries, which owns the pub, said: "The pub staffs just want to put it all behind them."
