Southampton Docks guards tied up in £2m cigarette raid

A gang stole a haul of cigarettes worth £2m after tying up three security guards at Southampton Docks.

The robbers broke into premises at the site overnight on Sunday and stole 26 pallets of cigarettes, including Benson and Hedges and Lambert and Butler.

The haul was then loaded on to a white and blue double-decker IVECO lorry which was caught on CCTV leaving the docks area shortly after 0230 BST.

The guards escaped an hour later unhurt. Police appealed for witnesses.

'Highly-organised gang'

The vehicle had four spotlights on top of the cab and fairy lights around the front windscreen, a spokesman said.

Det Insp Simon Baker, of Hampshire Constabulary, said the three security guards managed to eventually break the "restraints" used to tie them up.

"They managed to escape after about an hour and raise the alarm," he said.

"This was a very serious crime carried out by what we suspect is a highly organised gang of criminals.

"We believe the lorry headed out of Southampton and joined the M3 northbound towards London, so we would appeal to any drivers who may have seen the vehicle in the early hours of Monday to get in touch."

Arrest over robbery which injured security guard

The security guard was treated in hospital for stab wounds
A man has been arrested in connection with a robbery in which a security guard was seriously injured in East Ayrshire.

The 52-year-old guard was attacked at the Tesco store in Auchinleck, at about 2325 BST on Tuesday.

He was taken to hospital and treated for stab wounds to his body.

Police said a 30-year-old man had been arrested and detained in custody in connection with the robbery. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
