Security guard robbed of cashbox

A security guard was robbed of a cashbox near a supermarket in Milton Keynes.

The Group 4 worker was approached as he walked towards Budgens in Tanfield Lane, Broughton, earlier.

The men, all in dark clothing, grabbed a cashbox from him and left in a dark-coloured car, police said.

The box was found empty in a car park in Annesley Road, Newport Pagnell. It is not yet known how much cash was inside, police added.

Shopper being soughtDet Sgt Mark Glover said: "There was a witness at Budgens, who spoke to the security guards and gave them information about the vehicle the offenders were using.

"Unfortunately the witnesses left without leaving any details and I am urgently seeking this person to come forward.

"I am also appealing for anyone who witnessed the robbery, saw the offenders leave the cash box in Annesley Road, or saw a dark-coloured vehicle driving between Broughton and Newport Pagnell acting suspiciously this morning to contact me."

Anyone with information on the incident, which began at 0730 GMT, should contact Thames Valley Police.

Guard threatened during robbery

A security guard has been robbed of thousands of pounds while refilling a cash point in Stanford-le-Hope, Essex.

Two men dressed in black and wearing balaclavas entered the Nationwide bank in Kings Parade at 1915 GMT on 16 November.

One was armed with a gun and threatened the guard before taking a cash box which police say contained £10 notes totalling a five-figure sum.

The 42-year-old security guard from Chelmsford was unhurt.

Tilbury police believe the robbers were travelling in a dark-coloured car which had blacked out windows.

Detectives are trying to trace the car and have appealed for anyone who may have seen it in the days before the incident.

'Naked' scanner in airport trial

A trial of a scanner that produces "naked" images of passengers has begun at Manchester Airport.

The authorities say it will speed up security checks by quickly revealing any concealed weapons or explosives.

But the full body scans will also show up breast enlargements, body piercings and a clear black-and-white outline of passengers' genitals.

The airport has stressed that the images are not pornographic and will be destroyed straight away.

Sarah Barrett, head of customer experience at the airport, said most passengers did not like the traditional "pat down" search.

At Manchester Airport's Terminal 2, where the machine has been introduced, passengers will no longer have to remove their coats, shoes and belts as they go through security checks.

Ms Barrett said: "This scanner completely takes away the hassle of needing to undress."

Ms Barrett said the black-and-white image would only be seen by one officer in a remote location before it was deleted.

"The images are not erotic or pornographic and they cannot be stored or captured in any way," she said.

Passengers could refuse to be scanned, she added.

The scanners cost £80,000 each. They work by beaming electromagnetic waves on to passengers while they stand in a booth. A virtual three-dimensional image is then created from the reflected energy.

Ms Barrett said the radiation levels were "super safe".

She said: "Passengers can go through this machine 5,000 times a year each without worrying. The amount of radiation transmitted is tiny."

The Department for Transport will decide whether to install them permanently in about a year's time.

The scanners, made by RapiScan Systems, have already been tried at Heathrow Airport from 2004 to 2008.

A BAA Heathrow spokeswoman said the technology had been "very effective" and the airport operator was considering possible wider use of it in the future.

The scanners are being gradually rolled out at airports across the US, after use in Los Angeles and New York.

A security guard refilling a cash machine in a bank has been robbed by a masked gang wielding crowbars and a sledgehammer.

Three thieves targeted the Halifax Bank on High Road in Beeston, on the outskirts of Nottingham just before 2000 BST on Tuesday.

Detectives said the gang of three then fled the building and left in a Vauxhall Corsa car.

Officers believe the gang had watched the security guards for some time.

Jail for tasered cash van robber

A man has been jailed for six years for robbing a cash-in-transit van in west Belfast last November.

William Francis Evans, 28, of no fixed address, was carrying a foot-long kitchen knife during the robbery at the Park Centre, Belfast Crown Court heard.

As he ran off, he was cornered by police and shot with a Taser stun gun.

Jailing Evans, the judge said he received a five-year sentence in 2005 for acting as a getaway driver in another security van robbery.

A prosecuting lawyer earlier told the court Evans had confronted a security guard who was bringing a cash box back to his van.

Drunk

Evans brandished his knife and threatened to kill the guard, who lifted the cash box to defend himself and received a cut to his thumb.

After his arrest by police who had been lying in wait, Evans was too drunk to be interviewed for a considerable time.

He claimed he had been drinking at a party and the robbery was an impulse decision.

He also claimed that he was carrying the knife up his sleeve for his own protection after previous assaults but later pleaded guilty to robbery and possessing an offensive weapon in public.

The judge said the crime was made worse by the fact that Evans "was not only willing to carry a weapon for whatever reason, but to produce and threaten to use it".

He said a "substantial period of imprisonment is fully merited".

Upon his release from prison, Evans will spend a further 18 months on probation.

Cash guard hurt in crowbar attack

A security guard delivering cash to a building society in Kent has been injured in an attack by two raiders wielding crowbars.

The guard and a colleague were filling a cash machine at Nationwide in High Street, New Romney when the robbery took place at 2329 BST on Tuesday.

The men, who got away with cash, escaped down an alleyway at the side of the building society.

One person has been arrested in Dartford in connection with the raid.

The guard was taken to William Harvey Hospital, Ashford with minor injuries.

Police said it was believed the robbers drove off in at least one vehicle that was parked at Mountfield Industrial Estate.

Officers want anyone with information about the raid, or who saw any suspicious people or vehicles in the area, to come forward.

Calls for accused guard's return

Efforts to bring a security guard facing the death penalty in Iraq back to Britain are intensifying, his lawyer has said.

Danny Fitzsimons, 33, is being held over the alleged shooting of two colleagues in Baghdad's Green Zone.

Briton Paul McGuigan and Australian Darren Hoare were killed on 9 August.

John Tipple, lawyer for the ex-soldier from Middleton, Greater Manchester, said the case was too serious to be handled by an "unstable regime".

Mr Fitzsimons could face the death penalty if convicted of the murder of the men, both 37, in Iraq.

He is also accused of wounding an Iraqi and is continuing to be questioned by Iraqi authorities.

He was in the army for eight years and had been unemployed before being taken on by ArmorGroup.

Mr Fitzsimons' family have been calling for him to be tried in the UK.

Mr Tipple, who has just returned from Iraq after talks with officials, told the BBC his legal team would be putting "a lot of pressure" on the UK government.

He added: "His duty of care was ignored and when he left the Army he was suffering symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

"We intend to call public meetings, the family campaign is growing and the government will feel the pressure of that campaign - rest assured of that.

"Daniel Fitzsimons faces the death sentence. This is too serious a matter just to leave as it is. We have to apply that pressure and we intend to."

Mr Tipple said his client was as well as could be expected "under the circumstances" and described his cell as "effectively a dungeon".

Michael Fitzsimons, his brother, said: "Given the circumstances with Danny's mental health he should never have been in Iraq."

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said the investigation was a matter for the Iraqi authorities.

But he added that "should it become clear there are concerns about the ongoing legal proceedings we will intervene".

The Green Zone is a heavily protected region of Iraq's capital city, which houses Iraqi government, coalition headquarters and most embassies.

In January Iraqi forces took over responsibility for the security of the zone.

Armed raiders hit cash delivery

Police are hunting four robbers who attacked a security guard as he delivered cash to a bank.

Unconfirmed reports said two of the raiders at Lloyds TSB branch in Flint, Flintshire may have been carrying guns while the others had baseball bats.

The robbers made off with a large amount of cash in a green Jaguar, later found abandoned and on fire, and a silver-coloured car.

The guard and a bank employee were treated for minor injuries.

A force spokesman said the four robbers were brandishing weapons when they entered the bank in Trelawney Square at around 11.11 BST, demanding cash from bank staff.

'Make contact'
The Jaguar, used as a getaway car, was later found burnt out in the Salibsury Street area of Flint.

The robbers are believed to have got into a another car which made off in the direction of Deeside.

Police said one of the two people injured was treated at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Det Insp Alun Oldfield said: "I'd like to appeal for any witnesses who may have been in the Flint, Oakenholt or Deeside areas on the morning of 20 August, at about 11 am to make contact with us if they saw anything suspicious along the road from Deeside industrial estate into Flint."

He said he also wanted to hear from anyone who may have a seen green Jaguar in either the Oakenholt or Flint areas.

A police helicopter has been used in the hunt for the raiders, while a security van was cordoned off outside the bank.

Drunken patient fined over attack

A patient who went on a drunken rampage in a hospital has been fined and ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to a nurse and a licensed security guard.

Angela Charters struggled with the staff nurse and kicked the guard at Borders General Hospital, near Melrose.

Selkirk Sheriff Court heard she also grabbed a lead on a monitor, sending the equipment crashing to the floor.

Charters, 45, of Galashiels, was fined £270 after admitting assault and breach of the peace.

The court heard that Charters was taken to the busy accident and emergency unit at 0300 BST after suffering a suspected asthma attack.

She struggled violently with the nurse who was trying to treat her. When a female security guard was called, Charters kicked her on the backside during an hour-long disturbance.

The court was told there was no evidence of respiratory problems, but she was admitted to a ward because she had mixed alcohol with medication she was taking for mental health problems.

Panic attacks

Fiona Caldwell, prosecuting, said: "It should be noted that the staff nurse had to be diverted from her duty of looking after other patients for an hour while she was dealing with her in the ward."

She added that when police were called, Charters told them she could not remember anything, and accused the staff of lying.

Defence lawyer Hannah Jones said the mother-of-two suffered anxiety and panic attacks.

She added: "She only remembers waking up in Galashiels Police Station.

"She is deeply ashamed and apologetic for her actions. She cannot believe her actions that night."

Sheriff Valerie Johnston said such behaviour would normally merit a prison sentence, but she had taken into account Charters' significant health problems.

In addition to the £270 fine, Charters was ordered to pay the nurse and security guard £500 each in compensation.

Jobseeker attacks security guard

Gary Montgomery pled guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court

A jobseeker went berserk at a benefits office in Edinburgh and threatened to stab a security guard in the eye with a pen, a court has heard.

Gary Montgomery, 41, became angry after being told he would lose some benefit entitlement for missing an appointment at the Job Centre Plus due to illness.

He grabbed Benjamin Huggins by the throat and threatened to stab him with a pen before punching him in the face.

Montgomery pled guilty to assault at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday.

He will be sentenced next month after background reports are compiled.

He had missed an appointment the day before and had failed to sign on previously, said fiscal depute Gerard Drugan, prosecuting.

A member of staff at the centre, in High Riggs, Edinburgh, told him he would have to fill in forms and would lose some benefit entitlement as a result.

Montgomery became angry and was asked to leave when he refused to calm down.

"He was approached by a security guard and advised to leave," said Mr Drugan.

"A struggle ensued and the accused grabbed Mr Huggins by the throat and threatened to stab him in the eye with a pen which he had held in his clenched right fist above Mr Huggins' head.

"The accused then punched Mr Huggins' once to the jaw."

Felt 'aggrieved'

Montgomery was then taken to the door by other security guards and left but was later arrested.

His defence solicitor, Phil Moore, said Montgomery had missed the appointment the day before due to illness and had phoned staff to inform them.

He said he had been "aggrieved" at being penalised and asked to fill in forms as a result.

"The security guard was very rough with him and had forced his arms up his back to the extent he was bruised," said Mr Moore.

"When he was released he struck the security guard."

The court was told the security guard had not been injured by the punch.

Sheriff Nigel Morrison, QC, said: "An assault in a job centre involving members of staff is a serious matter and I'm going to get reports before dealing with you."

Montgomery, from Edinburgh, will remain on bail until sentencing.
