Guard injured in armed robbery bid at Lanarkshire shop

A security guard is recovering in hospital after a struggle with armed raiders at a convenience store in Lanarkshire.

Three masked men threatened two guards with a knife at the Spar in Mansfield Road, Bellshill, at about 0715 BST.

They attempted to grab their cash box but the guards fought back and one was struck on the head with the weapon.

Police described the attack as "particularly violent".

The men, who work for G4 Security, were approached by the suspects as they guards carried out cash-in-transit duties.

Police said they believed the raiders fled empty-handed in an Audi A4.

Both security guards were taken to Monklands Hospital in Airdrie.

The 51-year-old guard who was struck over the head is in a stable condition, and the other man, aged 52, was uninjured. He is recovering at home.

Det Con Mark Cummings, from Bellshill CID, said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the security guards to suffer, and a particularly violent attack on
both men.

"The injured man has a nasty head injury, and is naturally in a lot of pain and indeed shock at what has happened. Thankfully he wasn't more seriously
injured."

He added: "From inquiries made so far, it is believed that the suspects made their escape in a dark, possibly black, Audi A4.

"They were seen to exit and enter this car before and after the robbery. However, it isn't known in which direction they drove off afterwards.

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this vehicle in or around the area of the Spar in Mansfield Road between 0630 and 0715 hours this morning to contact us."

All three suspects were wearing dark clothing and balaclavas. They were thought to be between the ages of 20 and 25.

Police said the guard suffered a 'nasty' head injury

Trespassers attack guards at Godstone Reservoir

Families breaking into a disused reservoir to go swimming are endangering themselves and the lives of their children, its owners have warned.

Bolt cutters have been used to get in and police have been called after reports of assaults on security guards.

Sutton and East Surrey Water, which owns Godstone Reservoir, said the reservoir, a former quarry, was too dangerous for swimming.

It said the water was deep and cold and contained submerged trees.

Fencing smashed

Peter Stephenson, technical support manager, said they had consulted police and the Health and Safety Executive some time ago about dangers at the site and how to improve security.

Earlier this year, the fencing was substantially reinforced and a security firm also carries out daily patrols.

Mr Stephenson said, despite the increased measures, people were still breaking in and trespassing at the site, which has high security fencing and signs warning people about the dangers of entering the water.

Trespassers had used heavy objects such as tree trunks to smash the fencing down, he added.

"This is irresponsible and dangerous behaviour and it beggars belief that parents are trespassing and taking young children onto the site," he said.

Police have been called to incidents where security guards have been assaulted.

The company is now exploring the possibility of leasing the reservoir to a fishing club, in the hope that an increased presence will boost security and surveillance on the site.

Because of this plan and for safety reasons, a contractor has been hired to remove the submerged trees, Mr Stephenson said.

Graff guard 'feared for his life' in London robbery

A security guard feared for his life when an armed jewellery thief he was chasing opened fire, Woolwich Crown Court has heard.

Eitan Azulay, guard at Graff's jewellers in Mayfair, central London, said he thought "this is it" as one raider started shooting as he fled.

Aman Kassaye, 24, and Craig Calderwood, 27, are accused of entering Graff's and stealing gems at gunpoint.

A total of nine people deny conspiring to rob the store on 6 August 2009.

Mr Azulay, one of four men employed to protect the jewellers, told the court: "I was scared to death. I couldn't sleep for a month."

The security guard also hit out at suggestions that the raid, in which £40m of jewellery was taken, was an "inside job".

Under cross examination he said the claims were "ridiculous".

'Something stinks'

Mr Azulay, who was working on the door to the jewellers on the day of the raid, said he was immediately suspicious of the men who turned out to be the armed robbers.

I decided that if I was able to tackle them, or at least grab the woman and take her away from them at the price of getting wounded but not killed, it might be worth it

Eitan Azulay
"I felt something was wrong. The first thing that drew my attention was I felt they slightly had make-up on their faces," he told the court.

After the two men walked into the shop, the security guard said he turned and to his colleague outside and said: "Something stinks here, something is wrong."

The security man stayed outside the front of the shop while the armed robbery took place and next saw the armed men as they emerged from the building with a shop assistant.

He told the court that he decided to chase them to the getaway car.

"I decided that if I was able to tackle them, or at least grab the woman and take her away from them at the price of getting wounded but not killed, it might be worth it," he told the court.

But as he ran towards the two men, the one holding the shop assistant let her go, he said.

Puff of smoke

As one of the armed robbers got into the car, he turned towards Mr Azulay and fired.

"I thought, this is it"," he said.

Video footage of Mr Azulay running towards the car was shown to the jury.

A puff of smoke is seen as a gunshot is heard, prompting shoppers to run.

The nine defendants, who all deny conspiracy to rob, are:

Aman Kassaye, 24, of no fixed address

Craig Calderwood, 27, of no fixed address

Solomun Beyene, 25, of Lilestone Street, Marylebone, north-west London

Clinton Jamal Mogg, 42, of Westby Road, Bournemouth, Dorset

Courtney Lawrence, 31, of Ladbroke Grove, west London

Gregory Jones, 30, of Elgin Avenue, Maida Vale, west London

Benjamine McFarlane, 22, of Paveley Street, Marylebone, north-west London

David Joseph, 23, of Flaxman Road, Loughborough Junction, south-east London

Thomas Thomas, 45, of Penrhyn Road, Kingston upon Thames, south-west London

Mr Kassaye also denies kidnap and possession of a handgun and sawn-off shotgun.

Mr Calderwood also denies possessing a handgun and sawn-off shotgun.

The trial continues.
