Fire damages at former Reading University halls Bulmershe Court

A fire has damaged a hall of residence recently sold by the University of Reading.

The blaze, at the Bulmershe Court Campus in Woodlands Avenue, Woodley, started on Tuesday evening.

Prince Gibril, 36, who works as a security guard on site, said: "I saw a plume of smoke and I knew something was wrong."

Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the building was due to be knocked down soon and no-one was inside.

The cause of the fire, which affected the third floor and the roof, is being investigated.

The university confirmed the fire started in the Louden block of the building, which was sold to developers on Monday.

A number of students had been living there temporarily until last month but the hall was empty at the time of the fire.

The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee.

The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

Lee Rigby murder trial: Michael Adebolajo 'a soldier of Allah'

Mr Adebolajo told the court he did kill Fusilier Rigby
A man has admitted killing soldier Lee Rigby but said it was not murder because "I am a soldier of Allah" and "this is a war".

Michael Adebolajo, 28, described the killing as a "military operation".

He also told the Old Bailey he loved extremist network al-Qaeda.

The prosecution says he and Michael Adebowale, 22 - who also denies murder - rammed Fusilier Rigby with a car in Woolwich, south-east London, on 22 May, before attacking him with knives.

They are also both accused of attempting to murder a police officer and conspiracy to murder a police officer.Bible readings

Under cross examination by prosecutor Richard Whittam QC, Mr Adebolajo replied "yes" when he was asked if he had killed Fusilier Rigby, describing it as a "military operation".

Fusilier Rigby's widow Rebecca left the courtroom in tears as Mr Adebolajo claimed the soldier was still moving after being hit by the car.

He refused to answer questions about how long he had planned the attack, but said he had not planned to run down Fusilier Rigby, saying "it just so happened that Allah caused him to cross in front of my car."

He described attacking Fusilier Rigby with a meat cleaver in graphic detail, and said the soldier was already dead by the time Mr Adebowale had joined him in attacking the soldier.

Earlier the court heard Mr Adebolajo, from Romford, east London, give his name as Mujaahid Abu Hamza and confirm he was married with six children, including a seven-year-old boy and a baby who was four days old on the day of the incident.

He said he had been brought up as a Christian by his family and his parents had taken him to church every Sunday.

"The memory that sticks in my mind... is probably every New Year's Eve in the evening around 11 o'clock we would gather around in candlelight and read passages from the Bible," he said.

He converted to Islam in his first year as a student at Greenwich University.

He told the court: "My religion is everything.

"When I came to Islam I realised that... real success is not just what you can acquire, but really is if you make it to paradise, because then you can relax," he added.

Of al-Qaeda, Mr Adebolajo said: "Al-Qaeda I consider to be Mujahideen. I love them, they're my brothers. I have never met them. I consider them my brothers in Islam."

Last week the jury heard detailed and, at times, graphic detail of the prosecution's version of the events of 22 May, when 25-year-old Fusilier Rigby, of Middleton, Greater Manchester, was killed as he returned to Woolwich Barracks.

In one of the interviews Mr Adebolajo said soldiers were the "most fair target" because they joined the Army "with kind of an understanding that your life is at risk".

In court on Monday he said he had prayed the night before that he would target the right person.

"To be 100%, I don't believe there's a way to know 100% that was a soldier, however there were some steps that we took. For example before we started out on that day and the night previous to that I started worshipping Allah and begging him that... we strike a soldier and a soldier only."

He said he knew Fusilier Rigby was a soldier because of the camouflage backpack he was carrying and because he was going towards the barracks.

'Brainwashed by BBC'

When he was later asked what his defence to the charge of murder was, he said: "I am a soldier. I'm a soldier of Allah".

He continued: "I understand that some people might not recognise this because we do not wear fatigues and we do not go to the Brecon Beacons and train and this sort of thing. But we are still soldiers in the sight of Allah as a mujahid.

"This is all that matters, if Allah considers me a soldier, then I am a soldier."

Last week, the court was shown mobile phone footage of Mr Adebolajo in the aftermath of the attack.
Members of Fusilier Rigby's family heard Mr Adebolajo giving evidence
On Monday he said he wanted to film the scene of the attack to get his message across without people being brainwashed by the BBC.

He said he was "almost certain" he would be shot and killed by the firearms officers who arrived at the scene of the attack in Woolwich.

Last week, CCTV footage of him running towards the police car with a meat cleaver raised was shown to the court.

He complained on Monday that the officers had not shot him in the head but said he had no grievance with them, because they were "just doing their duty".

He said he should be ransomed back to other jihadi fighters, set free or killed if he was found guilty.

Earlier, he told the court the "vast majority" of his friends growing up in Romford had been white and British.

One of them, Kirk Redpath, joined the Army and was later killed in Iraq.

Mr Adebolajo said: "I hold Tony Blair responsible for his death."

The defendant told the court that he had tried to travel to Somalia in 2010 but was captured in Kenya and returned to the UK.

The trial continues on Tuesday.

Closing speeches in Clive Carter SECC murder trial

Clive Carter has admitted killing
Khanokporn Satjawat
Closing speeches have been made in the trial of a security guard accused of murdering a female conference delegate at the SECC complex in Glasgow.

Prosecutor John Scullion said Clive Carter was "cold-blooded" and had shown "no regret or remorse" for his actions.

Defence QC Ian Duguid said Carter's personality disorder was responsible for the way he acted.

Carter denies murder but admits killing Khanokporn Satjawat while suffering from diminished responsibility.

Mrs Satjawat, 42, from Thailand, died while attending a conference for HIV drug therapy at the Clyde Auditorium, which is part of the SECC complex, on 12 November 2012.

She sustained massive head and facial injuries after being battered with a fire extinguisher in a female toilet.

Carter, from Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, was working as a security guard at the venue at the time of the incident.

He has claimed he has no memory of the killing or alleged attempts to cover it up.

Victim abandoned

In his closing speech, advocate depute Mr Scullion said: "Clive Carter's actions after Khanokporn Satjawat's death were those of a cold-blooded man who knew exactly what he was doing.

"He showed no regret or remorse for what he had done and he made no attempt to assist Khanokporn Satjawat or get medical help in a building full of doctors."

Khanokporn Satjawat was attending a pharmaceutical
conference when she died
He added: "Such was the lack of interest or concern for Khanokporn Satjawat's fate that minutes after beating her to death Clive Carter was seen sitting in the rest area eating his sandwiches."

Mr Scullion said Carter claimed he asked to see Mrs Satjawat's security pass and that she responded by "shoving" the badge in his face and that he only knows through his legal team disclosing evidence that he killed her with a fire extinguisher and he has no memory of the attack.

He told the jury: "I suggest Clive Carter lied to you about his lack of memory about this important evidence."

Mr Scullion said Carter has always known he is responsible for her death.

The court was told that Carter claimed he did not know why he removed his jacket and left it in the toilet then said he could not remember where he then put it, but the prosecutor said it was "an attempt by him to engineer a scenario" to explain the blood on it.'Brutal and merciless'

He was described as "calculated and devious" in the hours after the killing.

In urging the jury to convict Carter of murder, Mr Scullion said that the emotionally unstable personality disorder Carter suffers from, was not at the severe end of the spectrum.

Mr Scullion said: "This was a brutal and merciless attack on a defenceless woman who was doing nothing but going about her business.

"She was attacked by a man being paid to ensure she was safe when going about her business.

"Clive Carter had no concern about Khanokporn Satjawat as she lay battered on the floor in the ladies toilet.

"He did what was required to avoid the consequences."

In his closing speech, Mr Duguid said that Carter suffers from a personality disorder - emotionally unstable personality disorder of the impulse type - and claimed it was this that caused him to act the way he did.

He told the jurors that their choice was between murder and culpable homicide and said that they must not think that opting for culpable homicide was choosing a soft option.'Brutal killing'

The QC said: "This is a brutal killing of a lady in the toilets of the Clyde Auditorium. The perpetrator should not be at liberty for some considerable time.

"Don't think convicting Mr Carter of culpable homicide will make any difference to this."

Mr Duguid said that it only took seconds for Carter to beat Mrs Satjawat to death with a fire extinguisher and added there was no planning at all.

He said that this fitted with the description of the personality disorder by psychiatrists.

Mr Duguid added: "There is no motive whatsoever."

Referring to the possible verdict of culpable homicide due to diminished responsibility open to the jury.

Mr Duguid said: "You shouldn't look at this as an easy way out for someone charged with murder."

The QC said that Carter had been forced to admit in evidence to domestic abuse and added: "I'm not asking you to like him, only to take a decision on whether he was mentally impaired at the time he attacked Miss Satjawat.

"Is he just a bad person? Maybe that's right. He was a killer in the community. What was the reason for him to be like that?

"The injuries are terrible. There is uncontrolled violence. It happened almost in the blink of an eye.

"This was an aggressive attack while his ability was impaired by his personality disorder."

The trial before judge Lord Matthews continues.

Dead Baby Found In Teen's Bag Was 'Suffocated'

The discovery was made after staff at a New York lingerie shop stopped two teenagers on suspicion of shoplifting.

Victoria's SecretA dead baby found in a teenage girl's shopping bag at a New York City lingerie store was born alive and then asphyxiated, said police.

Police believe the 17-year-old gave birth to the baby at a friend's house.

Police were called to a Victoria's Secret Store in Manhattan after the remains were discovered by a security guard.

A security guard stopped and searched two 17-year-old girls after pulling them aside on suspicion of stealing underwear, a police spokesman said.

The guard noticed a strong odour coming from one of the bags and found the foetus.

The girls were arrested on charges of petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, police said.

One of the girls told detectives she was carrying the human remains because she had delivered a day earlier and did not know what to do, authorities said.

The city medical examiner's office said an autopsy was inconclusive and more tests are needed.

More serious charges could follow depending on the cause of death.

A spokesperson for Victoria's Secret confirmed an active investigation was under way.

An NYPD crime scene unit spent a few hours gathering evidence inside the store, which remained open for business.

Wortley security guard attacked with axe

A masked robber escaped with a "significant amount of cash" after attacking a security guard with an axe outside a supermarket, police say.

The guard was hit as he collected a cashbox from Asda, in Lansdowne Street, Wortley, Leeds, at 10:45 BST on Monday.

West Yorkshire Police said the robber demanded the box and struck the guard with the axe when he resisted. The guard received minor injuries.

The man escaped in a waiting black Ford Focus, which was later found abandoned.

Detectives have issued an appeal for anyone who witnessed the robbery or saw the car, which was later found nearby in Highfield Close, to come forward.

Suspected al-Qaeda militants storm Yemeni army base

The Yemeni army has sent reinforcements to the port city of Mukalla to retake an army headquarters overrun by gunmen.

At least three soldiers and two attackers were killed when 30 gunmen in army uniforms attacked the compound.

Some soldiers managed to escape but others are still inside the headquarters, which is surrounded by armoured vehicles.

Yemen is struggling to control general lawlessness, an al-Qaeda insurgency, and divisions within the army.

Officials say the militants drove up to the army headquarters in stolen military trucks, firing at security guards and setting off explosives at the main gate.

They took control of the compound, in the south-eastern province of Hadramawt, and are reported to have taken a number of hostages.

Yemeni army reinforcements have been deployed to the headquarters, and have cordoned off the surrounding area.

On 20 September, suspected al-Qaeda fighters killed at least 40 soldiers and police in simultaneous attacks on military targets in the neighbouring province of Shabwa.

Venezuela arrests 22 over cocaine in plane to Paris

The Venezuelan authorities have now arrested 22 people in connection to a massive cocaine haul found on an Air France flight from Caracas to Paris.

Eight members of the National Guard and nine Air France and airport staff have been detained on drug charges.

The guards were in charge of security at Caracas airport, where 31 suitcases were smuggled on to the plane.

About 1.3 tonnes of cocaine were seized at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport earlier this month.

The members of the National Guard and nine of the civilians were charged by a court of conspiracy and "aggravated illicit trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances."

But another five civilian suspects have not yet appeared before the court.

The seizure - with a street value of $270m (£167m) - was one of the biggest ever to be made on French territory.

Air France said it was investigating whether there was any complicity within the company.

The drugs had been destined for the 'Ndrangheta, the Italian mafia based in Calabria that controls some 80% of all cocaine imports into Europe, French officials said.

Six people have already been arrested in France on suspicion of belonging to the smuggling ring. Three of them were from Britain, while the other three were from Italy.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says Venezuela does not produce sizeable quantities of cocaine, but it has become a transit country for cocaine from Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia, which is shipped to the United States and Europe.

Britons 'undoubtedly' caught in Kenya attack, says Hague

Foreign Secretary William Hague has said there are "undoubtedly" British nationals caught up in the attack on a shopping centre in Kenya

Soldiers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) arrive at at the Westgate Shopping Centre in the capital Nairobi September 22, 2013
There is a heavy military presence in the Kenyan
capital as the stand-off continues

Mr Hague said the attack at the mall in the capital Nairobi, which has left at least 59 dead and 175 injured, was "callous and cowardly and brutal".

Earlier, the prime minister spoke to Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta and offered condolences and assistance.

A rapid deployment team is being sent to Nairobi by the Foreign Office.

The government's emergency response committee, Cobra, has met to discuss the attacks.

And the head of the UK's diplomatic service, Sir Simon Fraser, said the Foreign Office's crisis team in London would be working through Saturday night and would be on standby to give consular assistance to British citizens.

The Foreign Office said around 30,000 British nationals are thought to be living and working in Nairobi.

Britons barricaded

The Somali-based militant group al-Shabab has said it carried out the attack in response to Kenyan military operations in Somalia.

The attack began at about midday on Saturday, when the attackers entered the Westgate centre throwing grenades and firing automatic weapons. A children's day event was being held at the time - children are among those reported killed.

Some witnesses said the militants told Muslims to leave and said non-Muslims would be targeted.

Hannah Chisholm, a Briton visiting Nairobi, said she and 60 others barricaded themselves into a large storeroom.

She told the BBC: "We kept running to different places but the shots were getting louder so we barricaded ourselves along with about 60 others into a large storeroom.

"There were children hiding with us as well as someone who had been shot."

She added: "The gunfire was loud and we were scared but at that point we thought the gunmen were thieves so we assumed they wouldn't try to reach the storeroom."

Amita Sharma, who lives in Slough, told BBC Radio Berkshire that a family friend's daughter-in-law who was four months pregnant was shot and killed.

Ms Sharma - whose mother is Kenyan - was at Westgate shopping centre two weeks ago and she said security was tight.

"If you drive in in your car they actually check in the boot of the car, they check under the car," she said.

"If you go in by foot then they have security guards at the gates where they check in your bags and they might frisk you. A lot of them are armed, they don't let you take photographs."

Early on Sunday, the Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre tweeted: "KDF [Kenya Defence Forces] & Special Forces have control of #Westgate 1st and 2nd floors. Parts of the ground floor and basement remain unsecured."

It confirmed hostages were still being held in these unsecured areas.

'Bring stability'

A Downing Street spokesman said: "President Kenyatta updated the prime minister on the current situation and explained that Kenyan security forces were bringing the situation under control."

He added that the prime minister had passed on his condolences and said the UK government "were ready to provide any assistance we could".

Mr Hague said "the thoughts of the UK are with the people of Kenya at this terrible moment".

In response to al-Shabaab's statements, he said work to "bring stability to Somalia, to defeat terrorism there, will continue".

He added: "Our High Commission staff in Nairobi are working very hard, visiting hospitals, trying to make sure that they are aware of British nationals who might have been in the area or caught up in this."

The minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds, also condemned the attack and offered his "deep sympathy to those affected".

Mr Simmonds said he had spoken to Kenya's foreign minister.

Strands project develops robot security guards

The University of Lincoln research team named Linda the
robot in honour of Lindum, the Roman name for Lincoln
Researchers are developing software for robot "brains" so they can be used as security guards and care assistants.

The £7.2 million robot project, led by a University of Birmingham academic, involves developing mobile robots that can learn from their experiences.

The University of Lincoln has been awarded £750,000 to help develop the software to process the experiences.

Security company G4S Technology and the Academy of Ageing Research, an Austrian care home provider, are both involved.

The robots will be tested in a care home, and a security environment run by G4S.

Prof Tom Duckett, from the University of Lincoln, said there were many potential uses for the technology.

'Our friends'

"While we've chosen a care facility and a security scenario as two possible applications, the technology is really much more general purpose than that," he said.

"[It] ultimately should lead to the coming generation of robots which will be able to share our living spaces and work spaces, and be our co-workers and, who knows, maybe even our friends."

The four-year Strands project is funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme, which supports research and development in the EU.

Dr Nick Hawes, lecturer in intelligent robotics at the University of Birmingham, is coordinating work at the eight sites taking part in the project, including universities in Austria and Germany and the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden.

Prof Duckett, who is director of the Lincoln Centre for Autonomous Systems Research, is leading the research on creating 4D maps of the environment and investigating methods for detecting changes and unusual situations.

4D mapping is like 3D mapping, but takes into account extended time periods.

Prof Duckett said the work was about "augmenting" human workers rather than replacing them.

"Where a security robot could be really helpful is that it could notice some really small change, some really small detail, a change in the 3D structure of the environment that a human wouldn't necessarily recognise," he said.

"Then it could alert the human operators and say, 'look, I've recognised something unusual in sector three' or wherever it might be, and then the human can have a closer look."

At the end of the project the research team will demonstrate their systems at science museums, public events and trade shows.

Prof Duckett said: "We will see this technology come more and more into our everyday environments in the future as time progresses, I'm sure of that."

“What did you go out into the wilderness to see?

7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.

9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

10 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’

11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it.

13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.

16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’

19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

Row over photo in shopping centre

A Facebook campaign is calling for people to boycott a shopping center after claims a man was questioned by police for taking photographs of his own four-year-old daughter.

Chris White took a picture of Hazel eating an ice cream in the Braehead shopping centre, near Glasgow.

A security guard told him it was illegal to take pictures in the centre.

A spokesperson for Braehead said it wanted to "maintain a safe and enjoyable environment" for shoppers.

Terrorism Act.

Mr White told BBC Scotland he was approached by a security guard after photographing his daughter "looking cute on the back of a vespa seat at an ice cream bar" at about 16:00 on Friday.

He said the security guard asked him to delete any photos he had taken from his mobile phone.

Mr White explained that he had already posted two photos, in which his daughter was the only person in the shot, to Facebook.

The police were called and Mr White was told there were "clear signs" saying no photographs were allowed.

Mr White said that one officer claimed that under the Prevention of Terrorism Act he was within in his rights
to confiscate the mobile phone on which the photos were taken.

He said the police officers took his details and he was eventually allowed to leave.

By Monday morning, more than 4,000 people had "liked" the campaign page which had been set up on Facebook.

Supt George Nedley, of Renfrewshire and Inverclyde division, said: "I can confirm we have received a complaint regarding this incident and one of my senior officers has spoken to Mr White regarding this.

"As a result a full review of the circumstances surrounding the incident and the allegations made is under way."

A spokesman for Braehead said: "Staff at an ice cream stall in Braehead became suspicious after they saw a male shopper taking photographs at their counter.

"The staff thought the man had also been taking photographs of them and they alerted one of the centre's security staff."

He added: "The member of security staff approached the man and politely asked if he had been taking photographs. Because of the nature of the incident, police became involved and also spoke to the man.

"Our priority is always to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all of our shoppers and retailers. The member of our security staff acted in good faith.

"We have a 'no photography' policy in the centre to protect the privacy of staff and shoppers and to have a legitimate opportunity to challenge suspicious behaviour if required.

"However, it is not our intention to - and we do not - stop innocent family members taking pictures.".
