'I survived the Israeli airport massacre'

On 29 May 1972 three Japanese students arrived at Israel's Lod airport in Tel Aviv on an Air France flight from Paris.

Once their luggage came through to the baggage hall, they drew out automatic guns and hand grenades, and began shooting people indiscriminately.

They killed 26 people and injured more than 70 others. One of the men killed himself, another was shot by security guards and the third was arrested.

The gunmen were hired by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who said they had recruited the trio from Japan's Red Army terror group, to carry out the attack, in revenge for the killing of two Arab hijackers earlier in May.

Ros Sloboda, who was living in Israel at the time, was seriously wounded in the attack.

LA police station gunman 'had AK-47 in his car'

A gunman who opened fire inside a Los Angeles police station, wounding an officer, left a powerful assault rifle in his car outside, police have said.

Daniel Yealu, 29, entered the lobby on Monday night, said he had a complaint, then began shooting, police said.

He hit one officer several times before he was wounded in the ensuing shootout, police said.

The suspected gunman is in critical condition in hospital while the wounded officer is expected to recover.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said Mr Yealu had left an AK-47 rifle in his vehicle parked outside the station.

"By the grace of God, the suspect did not come in with the assault weapons that he has had access to, one of which I believe was in his vehicle," Mr Beck said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Officials also found ammunition and several weapons including two assault-style rifles, a shotgun and two handguns at Mr Yealu's home.

Records showed he had been licensed to work as a security guard since 2005 and to carry a firearm since 2007.

Police say the shooting began shortly after 20:00 local time on Monday (03:00 GMT Tuesday), when a gunman entered the station's small lobby and approached its front desk.

The gunman said "I have a complaint", before he began shooting at the officers, Cdr Andrew Smith said.

Despite one of them being wounded, both were able to return fire, hitting the suspect several times.

No-one else was injured in the shooting and police say they know of no motive yet for the attack.

Sandwich security guard rescued from mud

A security guard who went missing for two hours while out on patrol was eventually found stuck fast in mud on the banks of the River Stour in Kent.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service, two lifeboats, the Coastguard and paramedics were sent to the scene in Sandwich at about 21:45 GMT on Sunday.

Rescuers said the man's life would have been in danger if it had been high tide on the River Stour at the time.

The alarm was raised when another guard heard his cries for help.

The man, who had fallen into the mud, was treated for hypothermia.

'Most wanted' fugitive Andrew Moran jailed in Spain

A man who became one of Britain's most wanted fugitives has been jailed in the Spanish capital for drugs and firearms offences.

Andrew Moran, 31, from Salford, pleaded guilty in Madrid to offences committed in Spain while on the run and wanted by Lancashire Police.

He had absconded during an armed robbery trial in Burnley in 2009 and was convicted in his absence.

Moran was detained after a pursuit by Spanish police in May.

His luxury villa in the Calpe area of Alicante was raided and two handguns, 60 rounds of ammunition and a machete were recovered.

Security guard injured

After serving his six-and-a-half year sentence in Spain, Moran will be sent back to the UK and sentenced for the armed robbery and for escaping from custody.

In May 2005 Moran and Stephen Devalda, 29, from Salford, held up a Royal Mail van outside an Asda store in Colne.

The pair brandishing a handgun, machete and baseball bat injured a security guard and stole £25,000.

Moran was later arrested but during his trial at Burnley Crown Court he assaulted four security guards, vaulted over the dock and escaped.

He was convicted in his absence of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Devalda also went on the run before being captured in Spain in March 2011.

He was later jailed at Preston Crown Court for nine years and eight months for conspiracy to commit robbery and breaching bail.

In December Gemma Harvieu, 29, of High Lane, Chorlton, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender and money laundering, after Preston Crown Court heard she wired £3,600 to ex-boyfriend Moran in Spain.

She was given a 12-month suspended sentence and ordered to do 300 hours of unpaid work.

Moran's sister Simone Moran, 27, and Jason Fitzgerald, 28, both of Edenbridge Drive, Radcliffe, received the same sentence as Harvieu after admitting assisting an offender at earlier hearings.

Leighton Craft, 39, of Parkhill, Prestwich, was previously given an eight-month suspended sentence after making an untrue statement to procure a passport.

Four armed men rob Asda supermarket in Biggleswade

Four masked men armed with copper pipes designed to look like firearms threatened staff at an Asda store and stole a "substantial amount of cash".

The group arrived at the Church Street, Biggleswade, supermarket at about 22:00 GMT on Saturday, as staff were cashing up the day's takings.

They assaulted a security guard, who suffered minor injuries.

Bedfordshire Police said the men left in a dark blue Audi A4, driven by a fifth offender.

The vehicle, which had false number plates, has since been recovered.

Armed response vehicles were called to the area as soon as the alarm was raised and an extensive search carried out but without success, a spokesman said.
