Cash security van robbed in Oxford's Cowley Road

Two men who robbed a security van delivering cash to a bank in Oxford are being hunted by police.

A security guard was pulled to the ground by the men, who then stole a container containing "a significant amount" of cash.

They fled on foot after the robbery in Cowley Road at about 15:00 BST.

Police said no weapons were used but the guard was left with minor injuries to his hand. They want to talk to anyone who witnessed it.

Both robbers were described as black and about 6ft tall.

One of them was wearing a high visibility jacket and the other was dressed in black.

Rhino heads and horns worth £428,000 stolen from Irish museum

A gang of thieves have stolen rhino heads and horns worth up to half a million euros (£428,000) from an Irish museum.

Three masked men entered the National Museum Archives building in Dublin at about 22:40 BST on Wednesday and tied up a security guard.

The gang loaded the four heads, with eight horns, into a large white van.

The security guard, who was not injured, managed to free himself and raise the alarm shortly after midnight.

A police spokesman said the building on Balheary Road, Swords, has been sealed off for forensic examination.'Smash and grab'

An incident room has also been set up at Swords Garda (police) station and officers have appealed for information about the theft.

Nigel Monaghan, keeper of the museum's natural history division, said staff had taken the decision to remove its rhino horn collection from public display in 2011, following a spate of "smash and grab" thefts from museums across Europe.

The artefacts had been placed in the museum's storage facility in Swords for safe keeping when the thieves struck.

A statement issued on behalf of the museum said: "The stolen rhinoceros heads have a total of eight horns that have probably been taken to supply the illegal trade in powdered horn that is used in traditional medicines in the Far East.Poaching

"Their price is based on weight and the total amount stolen could have a street value in the region of 500,000 euros."

The statement added that several species of rhino have been "brought to the edge of extinction" due to poaching in the wild, so in recent years thieves have begun to target museum and private collections.

The National Museum of Ireland has exhibition centres spread across four locations. Three are in Dublin and the fourth is in County Mayo.

Its natural history collection is housed on Merrion Street in Dublin city centre, close to the Irish parliament.

Italy robbers in motorway ambush on security vans

Company spokesmen suggested that the robbers
may have made off with millions

Police in Italy say armed raiders have targeted two security vans in an elaborately planned ambush on a motorway, and escaped with a huge haul of gold bars.

The gang blocked the highway between Milan and Como with a lorry.

The robbers then made it look as if the vehicle had caught fire.

It seems that the thieves wanted to trick the security van crews into believing that they were only having to stop on account of a lorry in trouble.

Once the guards had pulled up, near the town of Saronno, members of the gang appeared.

According to the Italian news agency, Ansa, the raiders were wearing the kind of bibs that traffic police might use.

And again, it seems that the intention was to make the security guards believe that they were merely in the midst of a traffic problem caused by the burning the lorry.

But then the thieves opened fire at the vans with Kalashnikov rifles. About 50 rounds are reported to have been discharged, but nobody was hurt.'Wild West' operation

A police spokeswoman said that one of the armoured vehicles was on escort duty, and the other was carrying gold ingots and bank notes.

Its doors were forced open and its cargo transferred to three getaway cars.

The Italian media have described the heist as a paramilitary-style operation that brought something of the Wild West to the autostrada.

There were initial reports that the gang's haul was worth 10m euros (£8.5m; £13m).

But Ansa quoted the company that operates the vehicles as saying that this was an exaggeration.

"At the moment we are not able to give an exact figure as we don't know it," Marco Melatti of Gruppo Battistolli di Vicenza, told the agency.

But he suggested that the worth of the haul could be in the area of a few million euros.

The police spokeswoman said that the getaway cars had later been found abandoned.

Alpacas protect new-born lambs at Berkshire farm

A farm in Berkshire has brought in an unusual security team to guard its new-born lambs - four alpacas.

Alpacas called Storm, Cloud, Nimbus and Cirrus are protecting sheep and their lambs from foxes on a farm in Wokingham.

The alpacas are on loan from a nearby herd which is usually used to guard hens and ducks.
