Man, 55, arrested over security guards raid in Stewarton

A 55-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery on security guards in East Ayrshire.

The incident, at about 07:00 on 4 May, saw two guards threatened by a man with a knife outside Sainsbury's supermarket on Rigg Street, Stewarton.

The guards handed over a five-figure sum of cash before the suspect made off in a silver Ford Focus car in the direction of Laneshaw Street.

The man arrested is expected to appear at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Monday.

Stand-off at Sainsbury's in Brighton: Man arrested

A man who locked himself into toilets in a supermarket and claimed to have a gun and a bomb has been arrested after a five-and-a-half hour stand-off.

Sussex Police were alerted by security guards at Sainsbury's, in Lewes Road, Brighton, at about 14:15 BST. 

Officers said the area had been quickly cleared to ensure there was no danger to the public or store staff.

Negotiators talked to the man, from Essex, who was arrested at about 19:40 BST. No weapons were found.

The man has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital to be checked over before being taken into custody.

'Calm negotiations'

Ch Insp Helen West said: "While officers were not able to confirm whether he had a firearm or any form of explosive device until the last few minutes, they continued to talk to him and tried to establish what his concerns were."

Earlier, officers said the man's concerns appeared to be personal. Staff and customers reacted quickly and allowed officers to carry out negotiations in a "calm and quiet atmosphere", she added. Police said the man had locked himself into the male customer toilets. No-one else was in the toilets at the time and no-one was hurt.

The 46-year-old man was arrested in connection with making threats to commit criminal damage. Ambulance crews and firefighters were also at the scene.

Appeal over security guard raids in Tannochside and Stewarton

A five-figure sum of cash has been stolen during two separate armed robberies targeting security guards.

Three men escaped with a four-figure sum of cash after threatening a guard outside Kwik Fit Financial Services in Tannochside at about 14:10 on Thursday.

The second incident, at about 07:00 on Friday, saw two guards threatened by a man with a knife outside Sainsbury's supermarket on Rigg Street, Stewarton.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. During the first robbery, a 53-year-old security guard was targeted by three men who pulled up in a white car, in Tannochside, South Lanarkshire.

Carrying knife

The guard handed over the cash he was carrying after being threatened by the men, who were carrying a knife and baseball bat.

The men then got back into the car and made off in the direction of Blantyre Farm Road.

The security guard was not injured in the incident.

The three men were described as being aged between 20 to 30 years old. During the robbery in Stewarton, East Ayrshire, two security guards handed over a five-figure sum of cash to a man who was carrying a knife.

He then got into a silver Ford Focus car and made off in the direction of Laneshaw Street.

The man is described as being about 5ft 4in tall, of stocky build, was wearing a balaclava, blue 'workie' type trousers and a dark top.

The car used in the robbery was stolen from an address in Glasgow a few weeks previously.

Tom Petty guitar theft leads to arrest

A security guard has been arrested following the theft of five of US musician Tom Petty's guitars from a rehearsal space in California.

The instruments, worth an estimated £100,000 ($160,000) have also been returned to Petty and his band. Writing on his Facebook page, Petty said he was "extremely grateful" to the police and "touched by the outpouring of good wishes" from fans.

The arrested man was Daryl Emmette Washington, 51, of Los Angeles.

He was a private security guard at The Culver Studios lot, which is used for filming music videos and tour rehearsals.

Police Chief Don Pedersen said the break in the case came when the suspect attempted to sell one of the guitars at a Hollywood pawn shop for $250 (£157).

Washington was booked on suspicion of grand theft, said a police spokesman, adding: "We believe that there is a very strong and compelling evidence in this case."

The instruments included Petty's blond 1967 maple 12-string Rickenbacker and his Gibson SGTVJunior. Three other guitars belonging to his band-mates also went missing.

The band had previously set up an email address for tip-offs about the instruments' whereabouts, with a "no questions asked" reward of $7,500 (£4,712) for information leading to their return. Known for hit singles including American Girl, Learning To Fly and Breakdown, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are due to kick off their US tour in Colorado on Wednesday night.

They come to Europe in June for a string of festival dates, as well as two nights in London's Royal Albert Hall. The shows will mark the band's first major UK shows for more than 20 years.
