Scotland international footballer Leigh Griffiths is understood to have been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting in a supermarket.

The Hibernian striker is believed to have been detained by security guards at a Tesco store in Edinburgh.

Lothian and Borders Police confirmed a 22-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident.

Griffiths is likely to appear in court at a later date.

After the incident, Griffiths - who is on loan at the SPL club from Wolverhampton Wanderers - tweeted that it had been "something over nothing".

He added: "got taken to the back, asked about it, looked on CCTV and I was away, simple as that!"

Other tweets said: "Iv been caught shoplifting but I'm tweeting? Pretty sure I'd be in a cell??? Think about it! #hugemisunderstanding" and "Not been caught shoplifting at all".


A Hibs spokesman said: "The club is aware of an alleged incident which took place on Saturday afternoon involving the player. This is now a police matter."

Griffiths, who has scored 15 league goals for the Edinburgh club this season, made his full Scotland international debut against Luxembourg last year.

He played from the start of his club's SPL match against Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier this month, Griffiths was criticised for telling someone to "go back to your own country" on Twitter.

Raided Edinburgh jeweller Rox upgrades security

Rox is to spend £50,000 on upgrading security at its Edinburgh store, following an armed raid which netted £1m worth of jewellery last week.

The news came as police continued to hunt for two men who took part in the robbery at the Rox store on George Street.

Rox said it had now employed a full-time security guard and installed a smoke cloud system as a deterrent.

It is also operating a round-the-clock "lock door policy".

A spokesman for Rox said: "The safety and well-being of our staff is our utmost priority at all times and following the armed robbery that took place last week, we are investing £50,000 in additional security for our Edinburgh store to deter burglars and give staff, who are still badly shaken, extra peace of mind."

Rox said its "highly sophisticated" new smoke cloud system released a heavy fog which reduced visibility when activated.

"Smoke cloud systems have been used to great success by other luxury jewellers across the UK who have previously been targeted in smash and grabs, and we are prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety and well-being of our team," the company added.

Witnesses appeal

Earlier, police appealed for witnesses after two men threatened staff, ransacked the shop and made off on a motorcycle.

The incident occurred at about 17:15 on 15 January.

Detectives said the men may have taken a taxi after dumping their getaway motorbike.

Their black Honda 650 motorcycle was found abandoned in Northumberland Street, North West Lane, along with the axe.

One of the robbers had a local accent and the other was said to be English. Both wore dark tops and jogging bottoms.

Bank robber Declan Lloyd tricked grandmother

A robber who got his unsuspecting grandmother to take him back to his getaway vehicle to collect a stolen cash box has been jailed.

Declan Lloyd, 21, from Salford, stole a cash box being delivered by a security guard to Barclays bank on Liverpool Road, Peel Green, on 24 April.

Lloyd abandoned his getaway vehicle but got a lift back to the car by his grandmother to retrieve the cash.

He was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to four years for robbery.

Police said Lloyd, of South Radford Street, approached the security guard from behind and grabbed the cash box containing "a substantial amount of money" and then made off in a stolen Peugeot 207.

He abandoned it in the Parklands, Radcliffe, before fleeing.'Dim-wittedness'

The car was located by Greater Manchester Police officers who were in wait of him when he returned to the scene half an hour later after getting a lift from his grandmother.

Police watched him take the cash box out of the Peugeot and put it into her car and then arrested the pair.

Det Con Justin Bryant said: "Due to officers' endeavours, and partly thanks to Lloyd's dim-wittedness in returning to the scene so quickly, we were able to identify the offender, locate the getaway car and recover the stolen cash in about 30 minutes.

"Lloyd did not think twice about targeting the security guard and even roped his unsuspecting grandmother in to try and get away with this crime but thanks to the efforts of all involved he is now starting a four-year prison sentence," he added.

No action was taken against his grandmother.

Torfaen council start litter fines with XFOR security

Torfaen council has started a 12 month trial using a private security firm to fine people caught littering or allowing their dogs to foul pavements.

The council says it is determined to tackle the issue which "clearly annoys" residents.

It has hired the same firm used by councils like Blaenau Gwent which in six months to last March issued over 1,000 fines.

XFOR's officers will be able to issue £75 and £50 fixed penalty notices.

"Torfaen council receives hundreds of complaints every year about litter, dog mess and other environmental issues," said Torfaen council leader councillor Bob Wellington.

Appeals
"We hope this trial partnership with XFOR sends out the message loud and clear - we will not tolerate people littering or not clearing up after their dogs."

They will be able to issue fines for anyone who drops litter such as food wrappers and cigarette ends or allows their dog to foul, as well as people who smoke in an enclosed public place.

The council says there will also be an appeals and complaints procedure overseen by council officials.
Blaenau Gwent council said its scheme had made a noticeable difference, but it has not been met with universal approval.

Wardens wear body cameras to record encounters with people for health and safety and evidence reasons.

Conwy, Denbighshire and the Vale of Glamorgan councils have also hired XFOR to patrol the streets to tackle littering.
