Bouncer shot dead outside a Clapham bar

Kolawole Babadiya, A DOORMAN was shot dead as he shielded a 21-year-old woman at her birthday party while working at Bar SW8 in Wandsworth.

Another man was injured in the shooting.

Friends of the 28-year-old Door supervisor, who lived only yards from the club, said they were still trying to come to terms with his death.

Michael Blair, 34, the owner of SW8 and a good friend of the dead man, said: "It was nothing to do with Kola; he was just protecting this girl, trying to stop her getting hurt. I heard a bullet whistle past me and turned to see him fall to the ground, the girl behind him.

"We didn't know what the noise was at first, but know it was the first round of some sort of machinegun.

"The guy with the gun wasn't firing anywhere near the club but across the road, then somebody started running towards the club and he fired the second round towards us and Kola was basically hit by a stray bullet.

"He's worked for me for two years and he was always the one stopping trouble, not starting it." Witnesses told how they saw Mr Babadiya and the other man covered in blood.

The Doorman was shot in the head and died in hospital. The other victim was shot in the back.

The pavement of Wandsworth Road outside the bar was littered with spent ammunition cases.

A witness, who did not want to be named, said: "I heard the gunshots at around 1.30am. They woke me up. There was one, and then bang, bang, bang... another 10 or so. It was definitely an automatic weapon.

"Then there was screaming and you could hear people running around.

"By the time I got dressed and came out of my flat, there were people around the two victims trying to help them.

"One of the men had been shot in the head and was shaking, but that soon stopped. I heard he died.

"The other one had been shot in the back and he was trying to call his girlfriend on his mobile phone. He got through eventually and then he went still. Another bystander, who also knew Mr Babadiya, said: "He was a bouncer at the club and I think he must have got caught in the gunfire.
I don't think he had anything to do with it.

"There were two birthday parties going on for two girls a 21st, and another birthday for a girl in her twenties. I don't go to SW8. It attracts a lot of people from different areas. All this is down to kids with toys." Officers from Operation Trident, which targets gun crime in the black community in the capital, are investigating the murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Adnan Qureshi said: "This is an appalling loss of another young life.

'He was always the one stopping trouble, not starting it. Kola was one of the good guys '

Pub doorman shot for doing his job properly !

A PUB doorman was shot in the neck for telling a hoodie to uncover his head.

Eric Atkinson, 30, was working at the Derby pub in Widnes Road, Widnes, when two men approached wearing hooded tops.

Mr Atkinson, a married father of one, told them they would need to take their hoods down if they wanted to come in.

The first man complied and headed to the bar but the second barged his way into the foyer and began to stare aggressively at Mr Atkinson.

Mr Atkinson, a fully licensed doorman who works as a delivery driver by day, decided to eject the man. As he escorted him from the foyer, he pulled a small handgun from his waistband and fired a shot.

Mr Atkinson managed to wrestle him outside but another three shots were fired, one of which struck the doorman in the neck.

Detective Inspector Paul Rumney, of Cheshire Constabulary, stressed that Mr Atkinson was not the victim of a feud or turf war but was targeted simply for trying to enforce the pub dress code.

He said: "There is no evidence that Eric was targeted. They approached the pub as customers and the gunman's associate has gone into the pub and to the bar.

"Eric has done everything perfectly lawfully and he has correctly challenged a person about a breach of dress code."

Mr Atkinson's parents, Susan and Eric Atkinson, fought back tears as they appealed for information.

Mrs Atkinson, 49, said: "Eric is a hard-working lad who loves his wife and 11-year-old daughter.

He's never done a thing wrong in his life and he would do anything for anybody.

John Alele examines recent threats in the modern day Security Environment.

The number of crimes involving knives, firearms and imitation firearms is reportedly in the increase in the UK.

Join me in the months to come as I take a closer look at the so-called ‘UK Weapons Culture’ and Government-backed initiatives designed to combat it – before detailing a current project that examines recent threats to Door Supervisors and Retail Security Officers in the modern day Security Environment.

In the course of my research, I will be communicating with Assessor and Consultant Geoff Woodcock and Andy Perkins and Claire Vanneck from Leicester University, who have researched violent assaults on door staff. Mark Toner, author of Stop it on the Door - Professional Doorman’ DVD and Jacqui Kennedy, director of regulatory services at Birmingham City Council

“Of the 839 murders in England and Wales in the 12 months ending on 28 November 2005 – the most recent period for which Home Office figures are available – 29% involved sharp instruments including knives, blades or swords”

Now, to mention but a few, On Sunday, 10 February 2008, a doorman was shot at a nightclub in west Dublin in the early hours of the morning. The 38-year-old was shot in the neck while working at the Red Cow in Clondalkin.”

“On a chill Wednesday afternoon in January, an argument broke out between a group of men who were dining in Nando's chicken restaurant in Shepherd's Bush, London. A gun was produced and four shots fired. One man was killed and a waitress injured. According to Nando's official statement, the restaurant "was in the wrong place at the wrong time".

“In the Event Security sub-sector, meanwhile, the number of weapons found during crowd searches is also on the increase. One of the most extreme incidents occurred last January, resulting in the shooting of two stewards by an armed gang during a concert by award-winning rap star Kanye West at the NEC in Birmingham. One of the stewards was shot three times.”
