Security guard threatened in Benton Asda van robbery

A security guard was threatened with a hammer during a raid on a cash van at a North Tyneside supermarket.

Police said the masked robber targeted the van outside Asda in Benton just before 14:30 GMT when the store was full of shoppers.

A quantity of cash was stolen from the van, but it is not believed the guard was injured during the raid.

Northumbria Police said the robber was stocky, about 5ft 11in and may have had an accomplice.

Man's jaw broken in Edinburgh store attack

A man suffered a broken jaw after being attacked while trying to help a security guard who was arguing with two men outside a store in Edinburgh.

Police said the men turned on the 25-year-old victim when he intervened during the argument.

The victim needed surgery after he was punched, knocked to the ground and kicked around the head.

The incident happened at about 03:45 outside the Scotmid store in Nicolson Street.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "The victim was attacked after he went to the assistance of the shop's security guard who was trying to deal with two members of the public who were remonstrating with him and, on doing so, they turned their attention to the young man when he intervened.

"In a totally unprovoked attack, this man received a serious facial injury. We are appealing for anyone who witnessed this vicious assault or has any information to contact us."

The two suspects, who are both white and believed to be in their early 20s, made off south along Nicolson Street.

The first is described as being of stocky build, about 5ft 8in tall and wearing a dark top and jeans, Timberland-style boots and a woolly hat.

The second is of slim build, with short dark hair, about 5ft 10in tall, wearing a grey top and jeans.

Third guilty of robbing security guard in Machynlleth

A third man has admitted robbing a security guard carrying £13,000 in cash from a bank in Machynlleth, Powys.

Robert Court, 23, from Solihull, west Midlands, was remanded in custody after his plea last Friday.

Mark Ricardo Lawlor, 26, from Solihull, and Micquel Daniel France, 24, from the Birmingham area, had previously pleaded guilty. They will be sentenced later.

All three took part in the robbery outside Barclays on 19 May, Mold Crown Court heard.

Judge Rhys Rowlands was told Court had also pleaded guilty to a separate robbery and was awaiting sentence at Stoke Crown Court.

Lawlor and France's sentencing had been delayed in order for the case of Court to be dealt with simultaneously.

Getaway driver

The court heard that France was a serving prisoner on day release from Sudbury prison when the robbery took place.

He was collected from the prison, and he and Lawlor robbed the guard after pushing him to the floor, while Court was said to have been the getaway driver.

France and Lawlor were arrested a short time later, and the money was recovered.

The court was told France had received a 12-year sentence for attempted murder in 2006, and Lawlor had received a 12-year sentence in 2004 for robbery and possession of a firearm when a security officer was attacked outside a west Midlands supermarket.

Judge Rowlands said the issue of dangerousness would have to be considered when they came to be sentenced.
