Axe-wielding robbers target Black Country shops

Two shops in the Black Country have been targeted by axe-wielding robbers.

Staff and a delivery driver at the Spar store in Lawnswood Road, Wordsley, were tied up by two offenders who stole a "large amount of cash", police said.

The incident happened shortly before 06:50 BST and followed the theft of a cashbox on Thursday morning at a post office in Lake Street, Lower Gornal.

Two men threatened a security guard. On both occasions the assailants fled the scene on a motorbike.

The manager of the post office that was attacked at 09:00 BST, Sandra Suckling, said: "As the cash man went out of the shop a person came in with a crash helmet on... wielding what we later found out to be an axe.

'Faces covered'

"We couldn't tell at the time - it all happened that sudden.

"We're a bit resilient in this place. Nobody was hurt. It's just the shock of it."

Det Sgt Michael Greenland, from West Midlands Police, said: "During both offences the offenders had their faces covered.

"We are examining CCTV in the local area of each offence as well as carrying out local enquiries.

"We are aware of a current spate of robberies across the Black Country area.

"We are at an early stage of our investigations and trying to establish if there are any links between the offences."

Michaela McAreavey case: Security guard due in court



Dassen Naraynen is due in court

 A former security guard at the Mauritian hotel where Michaela McAreavey was murdered is due in court charged in connection with the case.

Mrs McAreavey, 27, from County Tyrone, was killed in her honeymoon suite at the Legends hotel in Mauritius in January 2011.

Dassen Naraynen, also 27, is accused of conspiracy to commit larceny. He denies this.

He was originally charged with murder but this was later dropped.

He has denied any involvement in Mrs McAreavey's death.

Last month, two hotel workers were acquitted of her murder.

Detectives started a new investigation the day after the trial ended.

G4S donates £2.5m to armed forces after Olympics

security at the Olympic Games after G4S failed to
supply enough staff

Private security firm G4S has donated £2.5m to the armed forces after troops had to stand in for its absent staff at the Olympic Games.

The firm had a £284m contract to provide 10,400 staff for Olympic events but could not supply enough personnel.

Some 18,000 troops provided support at London 2012, including Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force staff, some of whom had their leave postponed.

G4S's donation will go to armed forces sports and welfare organisations.

The firm had previously described its failures as a "humiliating shambles" and was forced to apologise. Some 3,500 members of the armed forces had to stand in as a result of the company's shortfall.

The BBC's Ross Hawkins says that this payment does not replace the recompense pledged by the security firm to the police and the military.

G4S still intends to claim a management fee for its Olympic work, but expects to make a loss of between £35m and £50m.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said the donation would "go some way" to recognising the extra work placed on the military because of G4S's shortcomings.

He added: "The armed forces provided more to the security and protection of the Games than had originally been planned, but as always they have carried out their tasks with professionalism and good humour.

"This contribution... is welcome news for the service welfare funds and will go some way to recognising the inconvenience and extra burden that this commitment has placed upon our forces and their families."

Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir David Richards said: "The armed forces are pleased to accept this donation.... It recognises all the hard work and commitment service personnel have displayed during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

"Together with G4S, the men and women of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force have delivered a safe and secure Olympics.

"I am glad that they are receiving the gratitude and recognition for the excellent work, not just from the public, but from those they are working alongside."

Martin Stafford jailed over Michelle Gunshon murder

A man has been jailed for at least 33 years for murdering a female security guard who disappeared eight years ago.

never been found

Martin Stafford, 44, was working as a glass collector in the Birmingham pub where Michelle Gunshon, 38, was staying when she went missing in December 2004.

Stafford, from Dublin, was also found guilty of false imprisonment, rape and preventing the burial of a body after a Birmingham Crown Court trial.

He had served time for rape and false imprisonment in Ireland.

He fled to Ireland after murdering Ms Gunshon and was extradited to stand trial in the UK.

Ms Gunshon, from Mill Hill, north London, went missing while she was staying at the Dubliner pub in High Street, Digbeth.

The mother-of-three had been working at the Clothes Show Live event at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC).

Her body has never been found and her disappearance left her family with a "chilling silence", the court heard.

Stafford was caught on film by speed cameras at the wheel of Ms Gunshon's Ford Escort following her disappearance. Her car was found abandoned a few days later.

'Selective amnesia'

Prosecutor James Curtis QC had told the jury it was entitled to know Stafford's previous convictions for overpowering woman and forcing them to undergo sexual violations.

Stafford was jailed for life, with a minimum tariff of 33 years.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the guilty verdict and minimum sentence reflected "how dangerous an individual Martin Stafford is".

Harinderpal Dhami, crown advocate of the West Midlands CPS, said: "The jury saw through his selective amnesia answers and reached the only right and proper conclusion from all of the evidence which had been painstakingly collected by the police over the last seven years."

Det Insp Simon Astle, who led the case, said: "This has been a long and complex inquiry and we welcome the verdict of the court today.

"We will not give up in our efforts to trace Michelle's body.

"Clearly Martin Stafford can assist us with that and we will make every effort to provide him with that opportunity."

Issuing a statement through police, Ms Gunshon's family said: "Martin Stafford is a danger to people and should not be allowed out.

"We may have justice but our mum is still out there somewhere and only Martin Stafford knows where.

"Our only wish for the future is that mum is found and this can finally be over and we can grieve properly."
